YASHICA Revives Its 1959 Camera Design with the Colourful Y16 Pocket Camera

YASHICA is bringing a classic camera design into the digital age with the launch of the YASHICA Y16 Pocket Camera, a compact photography device inspired by the brand’s original 1959 Y16 subminiature film camera.

Designed for a new generation of photography enthusiasts, the Y16 Pocket Camera combines a slim, colourful body with digital photo and video capabilities, an optical viewfinder and an adjustable Xenon flash system. The camera is aimed at users who want a portable alternative to smartphone photography while expressing their personal style.

The original YASHICA Y16 was introduced in 1959 as a compact 16mm film camera. The new model retains its distinctive pocket-sized design while incorporating modern features for everyday photography, travel and social gatherings.

One of its main features is a built in Xenon flash system with three power settings: Low, Medium and High. The adjustable settings allow users to experiment with different lighting effects, from close up portraits and casual photography to group pictures, nighttime scenes and events. YASHICA recommends a shooting distance of approximately 50cm to 2m when using the flash for the best results.

The camera also features an optical viewfinder with eye sensor technology. When users raise the camera to their eye, the sensor automatically switches off the rear LCD screen, allowing them to concentrate on framing their shots through the viewfinder. The optical viewfinder can also be useful outdoors when bright sunlight makes it difficult to see the rear display clearly.

The LCD screen remains available for reviewing images and using the camera’s digital functions. This combination gives users the option of a more traditional viewfinder shooting experience while retaining the convenience of digital photography.

Beyond still images, the Y16 Pocket Camera supports video recording, allowing users to capture moving moments alongside photographs. A dedicated filter dial provides access to eight filters, giving photographers additional options to customise the appearance of their images.

Portability is another key aspect of the camera’s design. Measuring 9.1cm by 4.5cm by 2.9cm and weighing 93g with the battery, the Y16 is designed to fit into a pocket or small bag. Its flat silhouette also sets it apart from conventional compact cameras and smartphones.

The camera will be available in seven colour options: Baby Blue, Baby Pink, Butter Yellow, Green, Orange, Red and Black. The range includes pastel finishes, brighter colours and a classic black option, allowing users to choose a design that suits their preferences.

YASHICA sees the Y16 Pocket Camera as more than a device for documenting everyday life. Its distinctive appearance and physical controls are intended to encourage users to engage more directly with photography and the people around them. The compact design also aims to make the camera an everyday accessory that can spark conversations and encourage people to share their pictures and experiences.

The launch reflects YASHICA’s approach to reinterpreting its photographic heritage for contemporary lifestyles. While the original Y16 used 16mm film, the new model brings the same emphasis on portability and distinctive design into the digital era.

The YASHICA Y16 Pocket Camera is available for pre order through the official YASHICA website. Fulfilment is expected to begin in late November 2026. Pricing details were not provided in the announcement.
