Looking to Buy Insurance Online in Singapore? What to Compare Before You Choose

Buying insurance online has become much easier. You can get quotations, compare benefits and apply for some types of coverage without ever stepping into an office.

But if you are looking to buy insurance online in Singapore, getting a quotation is often the easy part. The harder part is working out whether you are comparing the right plans in the first place.

Insurance policies can look similar on the surface while differing quite significantly in their benefits, exclusions, claim limits and conditions. Price matters, but it should rarely be the only thing you compare.

Here are some things to look at before deciding.

Start with the coverage you actually need

Before comparing insurers, it helps to be clear about the problem you are trying to solve.

Someone looking for hospitalisation insurance has very different considerations from someone buying term life, critical illness, travel or motor insurance.

For life insurance, for example, you may be looking to replace income or provide for your family if something happens to you. For health insurance, the question may instead be what level of hospital care you want and how much of the bill you are comfortable paying yourself.

Starting with your needs makes it easier to filter out plans that are not relevant, instead of comparing dozens of policies based purely on price.

Compare like for like

A cheaper premium does not necessarily mean that one insurer offers better value.

Two policies can have different sums assured, claim limits, deductibles or definitions even if they appear to provide similar coverage.

When comparing insurance plans online, check that the main benefits are reasonably similar before comparing their premiums.

Depending on the type of insurance, this could include:

  • Sum assured or overall coverage limit
  • Deductibles and co-payments
  • Benefit limits and sub-limits
  • Exclusions
  • Waiting periods
  • Panel or network restrictions
  • Renewal terms
  • Whether premiums can change over time

This is particularly important for products such as health and critical illness insurance, where differences in policy wording can matter considerably when a claim happens.

Look beyond the cheapest premium

It is understandable to start with price, especially when quotations are displayed side by side.

But insurance is ultimately something you buy for the point when things do not go according to plan.

A slightly cheaper policy may have lower limits, narrower coverage or conditions that make it less suitable for you. At the same time, paying more does not automatically mean that a plan is better.

The aim is not to find the cheapest or most expensive plan. It is to understand what you are getting for the premium you are paying.

Check what happens after you buy

This is one part of buying insurance online that can easily be overlooked.

Who do you contact if you have a question six months later? What happens when your policy renews? And if you need to make a claim, will there be someone who can help you understand what documents are needed or follow up on the claim?

For simple products, you may be comfortable dealing directly with the insurer. For more complicated coverage, having someone familiar with your policy can make the process much easier.

At Planner Bee, we have found that some of the most important conversations with customers happen after a policy has been purchased. In 2025, our team helped customers with more than S$1 million in insurance claims.

Use online comparison as a starting point, not the entire decision

There is a lot that consumers can now do themselves.

Online comparison tools are useful for getting an initial view of what is available and understanding how premiums and benefits differ. Guides and insurance calculators can also help you work out roughly how much coverage you may need.

Where things become less straightforward is when there are trade-offs to make.

For example, should you pay more for a particular benefit? Is an existing policy still suitable? Are two plans actually covering the same thing? How does your employer’s insurance affect the personal coverage you need?

This is where speaking to someone can still be helpful.

The two approaches do not need to be mutually exclusive. You can do your own research first and seek advice when you need help making sense of the options.

Comparing more insurers gives you a better view

Another thing to consider is how many insurers you are actually comparing.

Going directly to one insurer’s website tells you what that insurer offers. It does not necessarily tell you whether another insurer has a plan that fits your needs better.

Planner Bee currently compares insurance options across 29 insurers and more than 500 products in Singapore, covering health, life, critical illness, maternity, travel, motor, home and business insurance.

Consumers can research and compare options online, and licensed representatives are available to help review existing coverage, explain differences between plans and assist with applications where advice is needed.

Support also continues after the purchase through policy servicing, renewals and claims.

Take your time before clicking “buy”

Being able to buy insurance online is convenient. It should also give consumers more opportunity to understand what they are purchasing rather than less.

Before choosing a plan, take the time to understand what is covered, what is not covered and how the policy would actually work if you had to use it.

The best insurance plan is not necessarily the one with the lowest premium or the longest list of benefits. It is the one that provides the protection you need at a cost you are comfortable maintaining.

And if you are unsure, ask before you buy.
