Phu Quoc, Vietnam’s largest island, is an easy place to embrace the art of doing nothing.

Find a great resort, settle by the beach, and watch the day drift by. But for those who want to explore, the southern part of the island has plenty to offer to keep you occupied.

What makes Phu Quoc so appealing right now is its spacious, easy-going vibe. While there is no shortage of new developments and attractions, it doesn’t feel overrun like some of Southeast Asia’s more mainstream beach destinations. There is still a palpable sense of a destination taking shape, making it an exciting time to visit.

If you are planning a trip, here are the highlights of southern Phu Quoc:

1. Walk around Sunset Town

Sunset Town, on the southern hillside coast of Phu Quoc, is very much a purpose-built tourist destination modeled after European destinations, so don’t come here looking for local Vietnamese culture.

Instead, think of it as a pleasant Mediterranean-style place to wander, with wide walkways, bougainvillea-fringed cafés and restaurants, and plenty of photogenic corners along the way.

The most iconic landmark is Kiss Bridge, which stretches out over the sea with two sections that stop just short of meeting. It has become one of southern Phu Quoc’s signature photo spots, and sunset is naturally the most popular time to visit.

Head to VUI-Fest Bazaar in the evening, when the food stalls, shops and drinks spots start to come alive. Some parts of Sunset Town are still developing, so it can feel surprisingly quiet during the day. By evening, though, the atmosphere picks up as visitors arrive for dinner, drinks and nightly entertainment.

2. Take the world’s longest over-sea cable car to Sun World Hon Thom

From Sunset Town, hop on the cable car to Hon Thom Island, also known as Pineapple Island. The nearly 8km ride takes about 15 minutes and is an attraction in itself-  it is in the Guinness World Record as the world’s longest three-rope cable car!

From the cabin, you’ll glide above Phu Quoc’s emerald waters, with scattered islets, fishing boats and glimpses of local life unfolding along the coast below.

Your cable car ticket also includes entry to Sun World Hon Thom, where you can spend the day exploring Aquatopia Water Park and Exotica Village. Remember to pack your wet attire and sunblock!

Aquatopia has a range of water slides, rides and pools, while Exotica Village has roller coaster and family-friendly rides. You can easily spend a good part of the day making your way around both.

For lunch, stop by Mango Restaurant for a hearty buffet spread of local Vietnamese delicacies, with western options as well.

Tip: Set aside most of the day for Hon Thom- take the cable car over in the morning, spend the day on the island with lunch, then return around 5pm to catch the sunset from Sunset Town.

3. Chill at Santo Beach Club

One of the more relaxing spots on Hon Thom Island is Santo Beach Club, which was being prepared for its full opening when I visited in July 2026.

The beach club has two pools, one filled with seawater and the other with fresh water, both overlooking the sea.

With the sea breeze and expansive views, it looks set to be a nice spot for a lazy afternoon drink once fully operational, especially after a morning at the water park or exploring the island.

4. Catch the evening entertainment

Sunset Town really comes alive after dark, with shows, fireworks, food and entertainment.

The headline attraction is Kiss of the Sea, a large-scale outdoor show combining music, water projections, lasers, pyrotechnics and fireworks with the open sea as backdrop.

The fireworks were genuinely impressive, on par with the kind of spectacle we are used to seeing at Singapore’s National Day celebrations. Kiss of the Sea runs at 8pm daily, except Tuesdays.

Another option is Symphony of the Sea, featuring jetski and flyboard performances by world champions, accompanied by music, lights and fireworks.

I would recommend having dinner at Sun Bavaria GastroPub, which sits right beside the performance area. You can enjoy dinner while watching the jetski and flyboard performances. Symphony of the Sea runs daily at 7.45pm.

Don’t forget to take a leisurely stroll through VUI-Fest Bazaar to browse the souvenir shops and food stalls. You might even catch the fireworks lighting up the sky as you wander around.

5. Play golf with a sea view

Golfers can also work a round into their Phu Quoc holiday.

Eschuri Vung Bau Golf is an 18-hole course on Phu Quoc’s northwest coast, right by Vung Bau Beach. Enjoy sea breezes and the sound of waves as you play, followed by a little post-game downtime in the jacuzzi, sauna or steam room.

It is about an hour’s drive from Sunset Town located in the South, so this is one to consider if you have an extra day rather than something to squeeze into a packed itinerary.

6. And, of course, the beach!!

Kem Beach is not to be missed with its soft white sand and calm, clear turquoise water. “Kem” is Vietnamese for cream or ice-cream. Unlike other yellow or coarse sandy shores, the sand here is fine and powdery, like ice-cream.

I visited in July, during Phu Quoc’s rainy season, but thankfully, the showers usually came in short bursts before giving way to clear skies. I actually enjoyed the weather, as the slightly cooler temperatures and fresher air made being outdoors more comfortable. However, if you prefer drier weather, the island’s dry season typically runs from October to April.

Getting to Phu Quoc

Phu Quoc is just 1 hour 45 minutes from Singapore by direct flight, making it an easy option for a quick beach getaway.

Sun PhuQuoc Airways flies daily between Singapore Changi Airport and Phu Quoc International Airport. Flight 9G720 departs Singapore daily at 2.20pm and arrives in Phu Quoc at 3.05pm local time. Phu Quoc is one hour behind Singapore. The return flight, 9G721, departs Phu Quoc at 10.35am and arrives in Singapore at 1.20pm.
