Google: Gemini App User Base More Than Doubles in Southeast Asia as Singapore Leads Daily Engagement

Google has revealed that the Gemini app has more than doubled its active user base in Southeast Asia over the past year, with the region emerging as the fastest adopter of the AI assistant among all Google applications. The findings come from Google’s first Gemini Report: Southeast Asia 2026, which also highlights Singapore as the region’s leader in daily Gemini engagement.

According to the report, Gemini has become the most searched AI assistant in countries including Indonesia, Thailand and Vietnam. The study examined user behaviour across Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam, providing insights into how people are using Gemini for work, creativity and everyday tasks. The growth contributes to Gemini’s global base of more than 900 million monthly active users and has been fuelled by Southeast Asia’s young, digitally connected population, with almost 40 per cent of people in the region under the age of 25.

The report found that younger users are driving much of Gemini’s adoption. Gen Z and other younger digital natives make more requests, engage in longer conversations and write more detailed prompts than older users.

Gemini’s ability to understand Southeast Asian languages has also played a significant role in its popularity. Nearly 70 per cent of prompts across the region are submitted in native languages, with Vietnam leading at 89 per cent, followed by Thailand at 87 per cent and Indonesia at 84 per cent. Google also highlighted that AI Singapore’s Southeast Asia Holistic Evaluation of Language Models ranked Gemini as the best performing large language model for Southeast Asian languages.

Mobile devices remain the preferred way to access Gemini, accounting for almost three quarters of all requests in the region. More than 40 per cent of prompts use voice, images or videos instead of typed text, while over 10 per cent rely solely on voice interactions. Features such as Gemini Live are enabling users to translate street signs, analyse documents and troubleshoot everyday problems in real time while on the move.

Creativity is another major use case. Around 40 per cent of all queries ask Gemini to generate new content, including images, music, videos and written documents. Over the past year, users across Southeast Asia have created five billion images using Google’s Nano Banana image generation model, while nearly one million songs have been produced since the launch of the Lyria 3 music generation model in the region.

Many users also rely on Gemini as a research assistant, using it to summarise lengthy documents, organise complex information and seek recommendations on topics ranging from travel planning and gift ideas to practical problem solving.

Singapore continues to stand out as Gemini’s strongest market in the region. Google said the country has the highest per capita adoption of Gemini globally and was Southeast Asia’s fastest growing market during the final months of 2025, with active users more than doubling. Young professionals aged between 25 and 34 account for about 40 per cent of Singapore’s daily user base, helping the country achieve the highest daily engagement levels in Southeast Asia.

Nearly four in ten user sessions in Singapore focus on productivity tasks such as explaining or debugging code. During weekends, however, usage shifts towards lifestyle activities, with casual conversations accounting for almost a third of prompts. Singaporean users also make more personal finance and travel related requests than users elsewhere in the region.

Looking ahead, Google is expanding Gemini’s capabilities with Gemini Spark, a personal AI agent designed to move beyond answering questions by actively completing tasks on behalf of users. Integrated with Google Workspace applications including Gmail, Docs and Slides, Gemini Spark can continue working in the background even when devices are not in use.

Gemini Spark is currently available in English for Google AI Ultra subscribers and will begin rolling out in Southeast Asian languages for Ultra subscribers this week.

Google is also continuing to expand Gemini’s feature set with tools such as Nano Banana, Omni and Canvas for image generation and learning, Custom Gems for personalised AI experiences, and new in app shopping features. Available in Indonesia, the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam, the shopping experience allows users to browse products, compare prices and view shopping listings directly within Gemini conversations, further strengthening the platform’s role as an everyday AI assistant across Southeast Asia.
