Insta360 and Leica Unveil Luna Ultra, a Powerful New Gimbal Camera for Mobile Filmmakers

Insta360 has officially launched the Luna Ultra, a new flagship gimbal camera co-engineered with Leica that combines professional imaging capabilities, advanced stabilization, and AI powered creative tools in a compact and portable device designed for content creators and mobile filmmakers.

Marking a new category for Insta360, the Luna Ultra brings together the company’s expertise in imaging technology with Leica’s renowned optical heritage and color science. The result is a lightweight camera system that delivers high quality video and photography while offering the flexibility creators need for shooting on the go.

At the heart of the Luna Ultra is a Leica Summicron lens paired with a 1-inch 8K image sensor, enabling high resolution video recording and photography. The camera also features a dedicated telephoto lens system equipped with a 1/1.3-inch sensor and F2.0 aperture, allowing users to capture natural background blur across five focal lengths and zoom up to 12 times, including 6 times lossless zoom.

Video creators can record in up to 8K at 30fps with Dolby Vision support, while 10 bit I Log capture provides greater flexibility for professional colour grading and post production. With up to 14 stops of dynamic range, Luna Ultra preserves detail across highlights and shadows, making it suitable for a wide range of shooting environments. For photography, the camera supports 37MP UltraPhotos as well as 200MP Scenic Panorama images.

Low light shooting is enhanced by PureVideo Mode, which reduces image noise while improving brightness and detail in footage up to 4K at 60fps. Powering these capabilities is a Triple AI Chip architecture designed to support advanced image processing and overall performance.

Despite its professional features, Luna Ultra remains highly portable. Weighing just over 200g, the camera is comparable in size and convenience to a modern smartphone. An industry first detachable 2-inch OLED touchscreen allows users to remotely monitor and control the camera with HD transmission at distances of up to 20 metres, offering greater flexibility for solo creators and unconventional shooting angles.

The camera is powered by a 1550mAh battery capable of delivering up to four hours of usage. Fast charging allows the battery to reach 80 percent capacity in approximately 23 minutes. Luna Ultra also includes 47GB of built in storage and supports microSD cards of up to 1TB.

To ensure smooth footage, Luna Ultra combines a 3-axis mechanical stabilization system with electronic image stabilization. Deep Track 5.0 provides intelligent subject tracking through features such as Auto Tracking, Active Zoom Tracking, Group Tracking and Smart Framing, helping creators keep subjects centred and in focus even during movement.

Leica’s influence extends beyond optics to colour rendering, with Leica Natural, Leica Vivid and Leica Chrome colour profiles built directly into the camera. Luna Ultra also supports professional workflows through ACES compatibility, making it easier for filmmakers to integrate footage into larger productions.

Additional creator focused tools include built in timecode support for multi camera synchronization, compatibility with editing platforms such as Final Cut Pro and Adobe Premiere Pro, and QR Color Share, which allows users to transfer colour settings between devices. AI powered editing features within the Insta360 app can automatically identify key moments and generate ready to share videos.

Audio recording has also been enhanced with a built-in wind guard for clearer outdoor sound capture. The camera additionally supports direct connection to Insta360 microphone systems, including single and dual transmitter configurations.

A range of dedicated accessories further expands Luna Ultra’s creative possibilities. These include a POV Head Tracker for hands free filming, Black Mist filters for cinematic diffusion effects, a Wide-Angle Lens that expands the field of view to 108 degrees, and ND Filters for greater control over exposure and motion blur.

The launch of Luna Ultra also marks another milestone in the six-year partnership between Insta360 and Leica. The two companies have previously collaborated on five products, combining Leica’s celebrated imaging expertise with Insta360’s Emmy Award winning technology. Luna Ultra represents their first jointly developed gimbal camera and was unveiled at Leica’s headquarters in Wetzlar, highlighting the close collaboration behind the project.

Luna Ultra is available now through the Insta360 Store, Shopee, Lazada and selected retailers worldwide, with availability in additional markets to follow. The camera is offered in Cosmic Black and Stellar White, with pricing starting from SGD969.
