Yesterday evening, we stepped into the refurbished Shaw Theatres Lido for a beautiful slice of cinematic history. The cinema kicked off its James Bond Marathon with the 4K restoration of the 1962 classic Dr. No.
The newly minted Lumiere Grand theatre is classy and spanking new with comfortable wider seats. The premium feel of the hall made it a highly appropriate venue for such a marquee event. The evening began at the Centro Restaurant on Level 5 where guests received a gold wrist tag and a 007 playing card. We used the card to trade for a welcome martini or champagne. A live Latin Jazz Band played iconic franchise tunes, setting a fantastic mood as many patrons arrived dressed to the nines in their best spy attire.

Going to the movies used to be a massive occasion and a grand social event. Dr. No first premiered in Singapore at Shaw Lido back in 1963. Experiencing it again 63 years later in a premium format really brought back that old school grandeur. Beyond nostalgia, this movie event served as a fun lesson in film history.

Dr. No follows Bond as he travels to Jamaica to investigate the disappearance of a fellow British agent, leading him to the nefarious Dr. Julius No, a scientific genius with plans to disrupt the American space programme. Along the way, he encounters Honey Ryder, played by Ursula Andress, whose emergence from the ocean in a white bikini remains one of the most iconic images in film history. The film runs 109 minutes and is rated PG13 for some sexual references.
As a former film student, watching this origin story on the big screen was fascinating. The narrative structure is very straightforward compared to the convoluted plots of modern blockbusters. Sean Connery brought an unmatched suave demeanor to the screen, though viewing the movie through a modern lens highlights just how much cultural norms have shifted. Certain behaviors and lines that were once considered charming now often come across as sexist or slightly creepy. Despite these dated elements, the film remains an essential and highly entertaining watch. The 4K restoration is an absolute marvel. The picture is incredibly crisp and clear, devoid of visual artifacts, making the vintage fashion, the colourful Jamaican scenery, and the classic dialogue pop beautifully.
The James Bond Marathon will continue over the next few months, showcasing a curated selection of other fully restored classic films. If you want to experience the thrill of classic cinema in a luxurious setting, you can catch the upcoming screenings at Shaw Theatres Lido.
