Mikkel Myer Lee Returns Home for Third Chapter of Complete Beethoven Sonata Cycle

Singaporean piano prodigy Mikkel Myer Lee is set to make his only Singapore appearance with the third instalment of his ambitious Complete Beethoven Sonata Cycle. The performance will take place on 23 May 2026 at the Esplanade Concert Hall, marking another milestone in his long-term artistic journey to publicly perform all 32 piano sonatas by Ludwig van Beethoven.

Having premiered the inaugural instalment of the cycle in Singapore in 2024, Lee has since brought the project overseas. He performed Part One in London later that same year, followed by appearances in Amsterdam and Thailand in 2025, where he presented different Beethoven sonatas. Along the way, he also made his television debut, featured as a rising classical music talent on the Dutch national programme Podium Klassiek.

A Programme Showcasing Beethoven in Motion

Part Three of the cycle will feature four sonatas: Piano Sonata No. 2, No. 20, No. 26 “Les Adieux,” and the formidable Piano Sonata No. 23 “Appassionata.”

Widely regarded as one of Beethoven’s most technically demanding and emotionally charged works, the “Appassionata” stands among the defining compositions of his middle period. Frequently performed by the world’s leading pianists, it showcases the composer at his most bold and transformative.

The selected programme traces Beethoven’s artistic evolution — from the youthful brilliance of Op. 2 No. 2 to the dramatic intensity of the “Appassionata,” and the intimate, narrative qualities of “Les Adieux.” Together, the works capture a composer expanding the expressive and technical possibilities of the piano.

A Defining Chapter in an Eight-Part Journey

Lee’s Complete Beethoven Sonata Cycle is structured as an eight-part series, reflecting a long-term commitment to presenting the full breadth of Beethoven’s 32 sonatas. Each instalment represents not only a technical feat but also a deepening exploration of the composer’s creative development.

Audiences can expect an evening of passion, nuance and musical storytelling as Lee interprets some of the most sophisticated and theatrical works in the piano repertoire.
