Emirates Poised to Become the World’s First Autism Certified Airline

Emirates is charting a groundbreaking course to become the world’s first Autism Certified Airline, setting a new benchmark for accessibility in air travel. In partnership with the International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards (IBCCES), Emirates aims to transform travel experiences for individuals with autism and sensory sensitivities. The certification is expected in the coming months, as more than 30,000 Emirates cabin crew and ground staff complete specialized training.

Making Travel Accessible for All

Air travel can be daunting for many in the autism community due to sensory stimuli and the complexities of navigating airports and flights. Emirates’ initiative aims to address these challenges, making global travel inclusive and seamless. This aligns with Dubai’s ambition to become the most accessible destination in the world.

A survey by AutismTravel.com revealed that 94% of families would travel more frequently if autism-certified services were available. By becoming the first airline to earn this designation, Emirates is setting a powerful precedent, supporting families and neurodiverse travelers with innovative measures and tailored support.

What the Autism Certification Means

The Autism Certified Airline (ACA) designation is awarded through a rigorous process involving audits, feedback from individuals with autism and sensory sensitivities, and evaluations of Emirates’ operations. IBCCES conducted detailed reviews of Emirates’ ground services and in-flight experiences, incorporating insights from over 14,000 individuals with disabilities, their families, and industry professionals.

The certification requires 80% of customer-facing staff to complete autism and sensory-awareness training, ensuring the airline maintains ongoing improvements and prioritizes accessibility across all touchpoints.

Empowering Staff Through Training

Emirates has committed to extensive training for its cabin crew and ground staff, focusing on understanding autism, addressing individual traveler needs, and mitigating sensory triggers. This program builds on its 2023 “Introduction to Autism and Hidden Disabilities” training, completed by 23,000 staff.

Enhanced Services for Neurodiverse Travelers

In 2025, Emirates will roll out new features designed for customers with autism and sensory conditions. Key developments include:

  • Sensory Guides: Digital tools offering insights into sensory inputs, such as sound, lighting, and smells, at various airport and in-flight environments.
  • Neurodiverse Sensory Products: In-flight tools like sensory fidget toys and aids to help travelers manage stress and focus.

These initiatives aim to create a welcoming environment for all, enabling families and neurodiverse travelers to enjoy the journey.

Collaboration for Inclusive Travel

Emirates is collaborating with Dubai Airports, Dubai Tourism, and other local authorities to advance accessibility across Dubai’s travel ecosystem. Achievements include Dubai International Airport’s certification as the first autism-certified airport and Emirates’ recognition for its Terminal 3 check-in facilities in 2024. Together, these efforts contribute to Dubai’s vision of becoming the first Certified Autism Destination in the Eastern Hemisphere.
