We recently went on a 5D4N trip to explore South Thailand, flying to Hat Yai via AirAsia and traveling to Trang and Phatthalung from there and back.

After covering the highlights in Hat Yai, consider venturing further into the beautiful provinces of Trang and Phatthalung for a longer vacation in South Thailand. Just a 1.5-hour drive from Hat Yai, Thale Noi Wetlands is a vast protected area that is perfect for nature lovers. It is one of Thailand’s largest freshwater lakes, known for its diverse bird species and stunning sunrise views. A morning boat ride through the wetlands is highly recommended and is a serene way to start your exploration of Phatthalung.

Thale Noi, meaning “Little Sea,” spans over 460 square kilometres and offers a unique blend of breathtaking scenery, abundant wildlife, and rich cultural heritage. The lake is home to a vast array of migratory birds, lotus-filled wetlands, and traditional fishing communities, making it an idyllic escape for those looking to immerse themselves in South Thailand’s natural beauty.

The area around the jetty is peppered with many local stores touting local snacks and dried products like salted fish. We tried the fried fish roe there which is a nice little treat worth trying. Do try it too if you are game for some local flavours.

2. Srinaka Model Village – Artisanal Naturally Dyed Fabric

if artisanal handicraft and fashion wear is your kind of thing, visit Srinaka Model Village to check out their naturally dyed tie-dye fabric. Material such as tree bark, yellow ginger and mangosteen leaves are used as the natural dye or the instruments used to produce the tie-dye fabric. Everything used in the production is natural and sustainable and the craftspeople are all recruited from the local village to support a cottage enterprise model.

A visit to the village is an interesting way to engage with local culture, interact with the local community and also take home an artisanal handcrafted souvenir to support their works.

This family-run restaurant started as a private gathering spot and has become popular for its home-cooked Southern Thai meals. Enjoy an authentic dining experience surrounded by nature’s beauty.

The owner of the restaurant is a local artist and you can see some of his artworks on display, along with his whimsical toy collection. The restaurant is only open on Saturday and Sunday. They only accept walk-in customers and do not take reservation so as to ensure a good experience for all customers.

4. Khao Khrum Waterfall, Phattalung

Nestled in the serene Khao Khram Forest, Khao Khram Waterfall is just a short distance away from Nai Dong Bon restaurant and is worth visiting the two attractions together.

This small, beautiful nine-tiered waterfall offers gentle slopes and crystal-clear streams where fish swim in abundance. The cool mist from the falls creates a peaceful, refreshing atmosphere, perfect for relaxing or enjoying a hike.

Our stay at this hidden gem began with a night in the Exclusive Explorer Tent, a cosy, nature-immersed experience that truly allows you to disconnect from the hustle of daily life. This is as good as it gets for a glamping experience, complete with a panoramic view of the forested area through the full glass windows. There is even an outdoor bathtub for us to take a dip while appreciating the sights and sounds of the natural surroundings.

The following night, we transitioned to the Mountain View Deluxe Room, where we enjoyed a more contemporary and luxurious stay, complete with stunning views of the surrounding landscape.

In the resort, engage in activities like tea-tasting sessions or enjoy a private dining experience at the Looklom Restaurant, which serves delicious Southern Thai cuisine.

Mornings at Kachong Hills are a treat, with a delightful breakfast spread featuring both Thai and international cuisines, served in the on-site Luk Lom Restaurant.

The resorts house several house farm animals, including a trio of friendly sheep that are accustomed to humans. Guests will have fun interacting with them over breakfast or while exploring the resort.

6. Island Hopping to Ko Kradan and Ko Muk

Trang is a gateway to some of Thailand’s most beautiful islands. Ko Kradan, named the most beautiful beach in 2023 by the British World Beach Guide, offers pristine white sands, clear turquoise waters, and vibrant coral reefs, making it perfect for snorkeling and relaxation.

To explore the area, hire a boat for a day tour of island hopping and sea adventures.

From Ko Kradan, continue to Ko Muk by boat to explore the famous Emerald Cave, a hidden lagoon accessed through a sea cave. It was quite a sight watching the water geyser spraying out from the cave entrance/exit.

Back at the jetty, several local restaurants serve delicious fresh seafood dishes by the beach. It would be good way to end the day with a sumptuous dinner by the sea.

7. Kantang Railway Station and Historic Learning Center

Experience local craftsmanship at Kram Koon Arts Creation, where you can craft your own unique natural tie-dye tees using traditional methods to take home.

This local cottage enterprise offers a hands-on workshop that supports sustainable practices and community engagement. We were very pleased with the tees we designed, with help from the craftspeople at Kram Koon. If you do not want to get your hands dirty, you can buy some of their ready-made apparels on display or enjoy drinks from their in-house cafe.

12. Cervidae Deer Farm

Cervidae Deer Farm, nestled in the tranquil countryside of Trang, is the first and also the largest deer farm in South Thailand, supplying venison to five star hotels and resorts in the area. 

It is currently run by second-generation owners, the son and daughter of the founder. They have added a fine dining restaurant to the farm, serving fresh deer meat, direct from the farm.

You can also go on a tour of the farm to feed the deers in the farm. With its wide open spaces and scenic landscape, the farm provides a rare opportunity to observe deer in their semi-natural habitat while gaining insight into sustainable wildlife farming practices.

Getting There: Start your journey with a convenient flight to Hat Yai via AirAsia, with a short transfer at either Bangkok or Kuala Lumpur. From there, explore the hidden gems of Trang and Phatthalung, experiencing the best of Southern Thailand’s culture, nature, and adventure.
