library@orchard to Undergo Major Revamp: Temporary Closure for Reimagined Learning Spaces

Starting 28 October 2024, library@orchard will temporarily close for a significant revamp aimed at transforming the space into a tech-enabled, interactive environment for all ages. This renovation is part of the National Library Board’s (NLB) LAB25 (Libraries and Archives Blueprint 2025) initiative, which seeks to modernize libraries with innovative services and experiences.

The newly revamped library@orchard will feature immersive spaces and a dedicated children’s section, creating new ways for visitors to engage with learning and discovery. The transformation will be progressive, with the library fully reopening in the second half of 2026. Further details about the revamped space will be shared as the project develops.

As part of the renovation, library@orchard’s design and applied arts collection will move to the Central Arts Library, opening at the National Library Building by the end of 2024. In collaboration with the University of the Arts Singapore, a portion of the collection will also be available at the National Design Centre from early 2025. This move centralizes NLB’s arts resources, offering enhanced access for students, researchers, and arts professionals.

Before the closure, library@orchard will host a three-week programme, “Design Is For Everyone: A Decade of Design, Arts, and Community”, running from 8 to 27 October 2024. The event includes an exhibition, a community wall for patrons to share memories, and activity booths from 26 to 27 October, where visitors can create their own memorabilia. Join in celebrating this milestone before the library begins its transformation.

Looking ahead, NLB has planned revamps for other libraries, including those in Ang Mo Kio, Queenstown, and Toa Payoh. These projects will involve collaboration with partners and the community, ensuring that libraries remain vibrant hubs for learning and innovation.
