Empowering Students with Disabilities: Launch of the First ‘Enabling Pathway Programme’

A new initiative, the Enabling Pathway Programme (EPP), has been launched to boost employment opportunities for students with disabilities, focusing on high-growth sectors with a strong demand for skilled workers. This groundbreaking collaboration between the SIM People Development Fund (SIMPDF), SG Enable, and the Institute of Technical Education (ITE) marks a significant step toward inclusive employment in Singapore.

First Partnership in Land Transport Engineering

The inaugural partnership under the EPP, known as the Enabling Pathway Programme (Land Transport Engineering) (EPP LTE), brings onboard SBST as the first employer to support ITE students with disabilities. The programme aims to align students’ technical skills with job opportunities in engineering fields and guide them from their studies through internships to eventual employment.

Launched by Minister for Transport Mr. Chee Hong Tat at SBST’s Sengkang Rail Depot, the EPP LTE offers three years of internships to up to 10 ITE students annually. These six-to-nine-month internships not only provide hands-on experience but also serve as a gateway to long-term careers. Moreover, students can pursue a Work-Study Diploma in Land Transport Engineering at ITE, with all course fees fully covered by SBST.

Supporting Students in Engineering Fields

The EPP is open to ITE students enrolled in Automotive Engineering, Rapid Transit Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering courses. The first group of interns began their journey in July 2024, with each student receiving a $2,400 Enabling Pathway Award from SIMPDF as part of the programme.

Future Expansion Plans

Following the launch of EPP LTE, there are plans to expand the programme by partnering with more land transport companies and other industry sectors. This expansion aims to create more job opportunities for students with disabilities across various fields. SIMPDF has committed $250,000 to fund the Enabling Pathway Awards for 100 students over the next three years.
