Singapore’s iconic Income Eco Run (IER) returns on Sunday, May 26, 2024, at the scenic Marina Barrage, ahead of World Environment Day on June 5. Following the success of last year’s innovative run concept, IER continues to rally Singaporeans to lace up their running shoes and join the movement towards zero waste.
Under the theme “How Far Will You Go for Zero Waste?”, IER, presented by Income Insurance, remains a pivotal event driving climate-positive awareness and actions across the nation. This year, the run offers five customizable routes – 3km, 5km, 10km, 15km, and 21.1 km – enabling participants to choose their preferred distance while championing a zero-waste lifestyle.
Inclusivity and Environmental Commitment
In a bid to foster inclusivity, IER 2024 introduces a new Kids Category, inviting children aged four to 12 to run 700m or 1km in support of the cause. Moreover, Income Insurance pledges to match S$1 for every kilometer clocked, contributing to green initiatives led by the Singapore Environment Council (SEC).
Pushing Boundaries in Sustainability
Building on previous achievements, IER 2024 implements several groundbreaking initiatives to minimize waste and promote sustainability:
- Running bibs reduced by 65% in size to minimize material wastage.
- Kids Category bibs made from seed paper for planting flowers, fruits, or vegetables.
- Exclusive use of plastic-free recyclable cups at hydration stations, totaling 55,000 cups.
- Offset of event tees’ carbon footprint and participants’ commute.
- Event tees made from 100% recycled materials, available as opt-in purchases only.
- Emphasis on reusing past event tees to reduce waste.
- Commemorative medals replaced with e-certificates to reduce material consumption.
- Educational and Engaging Activities
Beyond the run, participants can engage in interactive and eco-friendly activities at the IER Village. Exhibits demonstrate practical applications of the 3Rs (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle), while a marketplace showcases diverse organic and zero-waste products. Additionally, waste avoidance and efficient water usage are promoted through an organized washing system.
Recognition and Distinguished Guests
IER earned an Eco Event label from SEC in 2023 and aspires for the same recognition in 2024. Dr. Amy Khor, Senior Minister of State for Sustainability and the Environment of Singapore, will lead the 5km flag-off and run to demonstrate support for the zero-waste cause.
