Merci Marcel – New French Cafe at East Coast Road with Tantalising Flavours!

Nestled among the vibrant cluster of cafes in the East Coast and Katong enclave, Merci Marcel East Coast beckons with its modern retro charm, blending hues of pink and green in its chic interior. Stepping inside, you’ll immediately be greeted by the terrazzo flooring and the impressive floor-to-ceiling bar.

What resonated with me was the inviting warmth exuded by the space, accentuated by snug corners within the alfresco area, creating a truly cozy retreat.

The dinner menu offers a range of uniquely curated dishes. Choose from a myriad of cuisines like the indulgent Steak Tartare ($18) with wasabi or Arancini ($16) crispy rice balls.

Starters

The Salmon Crudo ($20), an exclusive dish at the East Coast outlet, presents a tantalizing fusion of flavors. This dish features freshly sliced salmon tartare mixed with herby white gazpacho, a delightful pairing served alongside bread. The interplay of flavors is exquisite—the sharp acidity of the pickled enoki mushrooms complements the dish while the crispness of shallots adds a delightful crunch.

The iconic Merci Marcel dish, Tarte Flambée #1 ($27) is another starter that everyone will enjoy. Featuring creamy bleu cheese and smokey Bayonne ham, it’s a timeless combination but the airy crisp of the crust is what really seals the deal. The hint of sweetness from the apple slices adds to the deliciousness. Do note the 20 minute wait time.

Mains

Of course, we had to get another Merci Marcel classic, Ravioles de Royan ($20). This creamy, cheesy dish is always worth the indulgence. Tiny pockets of pasta filled with Tête de Moine cheese covered with more cream, what’s not to adore? It’s a filling main that’ll definitely satisfy.

If you prefer something lighter, Sea Bass Ceviche ($27) is the perfect choice. The pairing of fresh sea bass ceviche with the smooth guacamole balanced out the acidity nicely. Tying it altogether is the sweet and tangy hint of passion fruit which makes it all the more refreshing.

Desserts

The dessert menu features classics like Crème Brûlée ($12) with speculoos alongside their specialty Marcel’s waffle iron style Croiffle ($11)

Chocolate & Whiskey Pie ($13) is a decadent choice made with rich valrhona chocolate. With the crisp pastry and the hint of whiskey, it allows the intensity of the chocolate to really shine through.

The most refreshing option is the Watermelon Granite ($9) with mascarpone. Its icey shaven watermelon married with the dollop of mascarpone was truly a rejuvenating way to end a fulfilling meal.
