When we think about seafood, there’s a few big chains that come to mind. However, did you know that there’s a quality live seafood restaurant tucked away in the North of Singapore?
Orchid Live Seafood, situated in HomeTeamNS Khatib, serves up Teochew-Style Seafood with fresh lobsters, crabs and more.
Venue
The space at Orchid Live Seafood is no-frills and minimalistic. For bigger groups, there is the VIP seating area which is sheltered away at the side of the restaurant, giving your group more privacy.
Live catch can be admired in the open tanks near the counter.
Dishes
Orchid Live Seafood’s bestseller is the Live Lobster Porridge ($288 for Live Southern Australian Lobster). The lobster is freshly retrieved from the tanks and cooked upon request. The broth was sweet and paired well with the flavourful slabs of lobster. The portion is also rather large, perfect for large families to share.
Other flavours for the lobster are butter-coated, garlic-steamed or cream cheese.
If you find the price point of $288 too indulgent, there are cheaper lobsters starting from $75 you can choose for the porridge, such as Live Tropical Lobsters, Live Western Australian Lobsters and Live Boston Lobsters.
Prefer a dish with less carbs? The Lobster Salad ($158 for 4-6pax) is a light and refreshing option. This appetizer is made up of chunks of lobster, fresh uni and a mixture of fruits such as honeydew and cantaloupe, with a base of house-made mayonnaise.
Crab is also available here and we tried their Salt Baked Yellow Roe Crab ($120 for 2 pieces). The mud crabs are baked with salt and house-blend spices. Although the meat was sufficiently fresh, the salt was slightly overwhelming and could become a little too salty after a few bites.
Other methods of cooking crab include with chili, salted egg, steamed with creamy egg white, black pepper, cream cheese or butter coated – you’re sure to find one that fits the fancy of your group.
A dish that impressed was the Signature Steven Chicken ($16/8pc, $24/12pc, $30/16pc). Fun fact: this dish was named after the restaurant’s founder! The skin was crispy and extremely flavorful thanks to the marmite and honey coating. The meat was also delightful and juicy!
Another recommended dish is the Garlic Steamed Bamboo Clams ($16.80/pc). Think mouthfuls of buttery goodness, thanks to the generous heaping of garlic topping on XL bamboo clams. The vermicelli steamed alongside the bamboo clams soaked up all the flavourful juices and was particularly enjoyable too!
Other seafood dishes that the restaurant offers did not disappoint as well.
The HK Style Steamed Soon Hock Fish ($8/100g) is well done with the rich savoury soya sauce bringing out the best of the fresh and tender meat.
The Seasoned Fried Baby Squid ($23) was an addictive snack to munch on with a tangy kick thanks to its sweet and spicy Thai sauce seasoning.
Last but not least, the Braised New Zealand Black Gold Abalone ($25) was a good indulgence and had a rich taste.
Verdict
The menu at Orchid Live Seafood offers a good balance of seafood and non-seafood dishes.
Besides the signature lobster dishes, the Signature Steven Chicken and Garlic Steamed Bamboo Clams are worth checking out. Furthermore, the location of the restaurant provides a quiet space for hearty gatherings away from the hustle and bustle of town.
