[Review] Cafe by Day, Izakaya by Night, PIPES by Hattendo brings Flavours of Hiroshima to Singapore

Long established as one of the top bakeries in Hiroshima, Japan, since 1933, Hattendo expanded and opened its first overseas outlet in Singapore with a dual-concept Cafe & Roasting Gallery and Izakaya, PIPES by Hattendo.

The PIPES brand aspires to be a place where people gather to find happiness, both in the day at the cafe and at night when it transforms into an izakaya.

Cafe by Day

PIPES features a professional coffee roaster trained in Japan, roasting your selected beans with Singapore’s first fully automated coffee roasting machine, the NOVO MARK II from Kyoto, Japan.

Another cafe highlight would be Hattendo’s popular Hiroshima cream buns, the perfect sweet treat to pair with their specialty coffee. There are 5 evergreen classic flavours available – Custard, Whipped Cream, Matcha, Chocolate and Azuki. Seasonal flavours are added as they are curated from Japan. When we visited last week, Lemon was one such.

Additionally, the cafe also offers Cream Pudding and Hokkaido Soft Serves with flavours like Pistachio and Kurogoma (Black Sesame).

Izakaya by Night

PIPES feature the best of ingredients curated from Hiroshima, such as famed oysters, fresh Chu Toro sourced from Misaki Port and sake brewed from Suishin.

We were invited for a dinner tasting and these were the items we sampled:

Fresh Oysters: Umibudo (), Ikura (), Mentaiko (), Hokkaido Cheese ()
Salt Baked Fish (, 1kg)
Gyu Katsu Sandos ()
Yaki Onigiri (, 2pcs)
Salt Grilled Tiger Prawns (, 8pcs)

We were impressed with the food presentation as we were expecting them to be dished out izakaya-style, that is less refined. Not only do they look good, they taste good too.

The seafood dishes like the oysters, prawns and salt baked fish were delightful and worth the bucks. A surprise for the night was the humble onigiri which was grilled to perfection and would go well as a comfort dish when you knock back a drink or two.

All things considered, PIPES offer a comfortable, laid back ambient for friends to have a cosy meal, some alcohol or coffee together, depending on the time of the day, without having to burn a dent in your wallet.
