[Foodie Alert] Li Nanxing’s favorite Japanese food haunt + Hokkaido Treasure Don at 50% Off

A Japanese restaurant nestled deep within a supermarket at Holland Village. Who would have thought that this non-descript restaurant, at least from its exterior, is actually a frequent hangout of Ah Ge Li Nanxing.

Entrance to the restaurant

We checked out Sens Sushi & Grill (SENS) and found that it serves fresh and quality Japanese food priced reasonably.

WHAT WE TRIED AT SENS SUSHI AND GRILL

During the Circuit Breaker period, the restaurant took time to refresh its menu and also expand its physical space. We were told Li Nanxing had quite a hand in giving inputs to the new menu. Go for a taste and perhaps you can give any inputs you have to the star himself!

Platter of appetizers: Fresh Japanese Oyster with Ponzo, Oboro Kani Tofu, Kawa Ebi Age, Pan-fry Foie Gras with Teriyaki & Sansho Pepper

All items on this platter are available for order ala carte. We were there for an media preview, hence we just sampled a small portion of each to save tummy space for the other dishes to follow. Special mention to the Pan-fried Foie Gras with Teriyaki and Sansho Pepper (S$16.80), which has a Japanese influence. Beautifully seared, the foie gras is glazed with the sweet-sour sauce; the rare Japanese pepper lends a citrusy, yuzu-esque note.

Kawa Ebi Age. Coated in tempura batter, these river shrimps make for a crunchy and flavorful appetizer.
Asari Butter Yaki (S$12)

The Asari Butter Yaki features sweet, fresh clams stir-fried with a strong sake flavour.

Sukiyaki (S$18.50)

Sukiyaki– Classic tummy-warming dish that can’t go wrong. Sliced beef. Tofu and vegetable in soy-based soup.

Karei Karaage (S$22.50)

New to the menu is the Karei Karaage, which is made with flounder fish. The fish is skilfully deboned, and then coated with tempura breadcrumbs before it is deep-fried to a beautiful golden brown. Not only the flesh, but the bones, fins and tail can be eaten.

Kurobuta Rosu Katsu (S$17.50)

Kurobuta Rosu Katsu– Thick slab of pork loin. Coated with Japanese breadcrumbs, the pork loin is deep-fried to perfection, achieving a wonderfully crunchy exterior and a juicy interior.

Oishi Maki (S$17.50)

There is also the Oishi Maki, which features fried ebi rolled with avocado, topped with tobiko and drizzled with a piquant mentaiko sauce and special sweet apple sauce. We think this will easily be a kids’ favorite.

And now, for the highlight of the night

Hokkaido Treasure Don

JUST. LOOK. AT. THE. TRAY. OF. UNI.

A SENS signature, the Hokkaido Treasure Don (S$38.50, UP: S$76.50) brims with the freshest seafood imported from Japan. This bowl will whisk you away to the heart of Hokkaido! This exquisite offering is a medley of uni, ikura, ama abi, hamachi, scallop and salmon.

This dish is Li Nanxing’s favourite, and ours as well.

OMAKASE- JUST CALL AHEAD

SENS provide Omakase experience too. Going by what we at Alvinology tried from their ala cart menu, you will be in good hands.

Omakase literally means “its up to you” from the Japanese words 任す, entrust. Trust the chef with your meal and be pleasantly surprised at their creativity in the dishes.

Just call ahead, and you can get the chef to customize a meal according to your budget and dietary restrictions (if any) – go affordable or extravagant, it’s up to you.

A key factor for good Omakase is a restaurant’s access to a wide variety of fresh and seasonal ingredients- SENS gets shipments of the freshest seafood flown in direct from Japan multiple times a week.
