Building on nearly a decade of insight into international travel trends, Mastercard today released the 2018 Global Destination Cities Index (GDCI): Play, a look at international destinations with the highest concentration of visitors traveling for relaxation and leisure, not business.

With factors such as affordable air fares and higher living standards, international travel continues to grow at an incredible rate, transforming local economies and enabling people to broaden their horizons.
Top Cities in Asia Pacific
With four remaining bonus long weekends in 2018, GDCI: Play reveals the top cities in Asia Pacific where more than 90% of overnight visitor travel in 2017 was for purposes beyond business – such as vacation or family visits. The list includes several well-known destinations that are perfect for a short getaway for beach goers, shopaholics and food travelers.
With cultures uniquely their own but a common focus on relaxation and fun, the top cities in Asia Pacific for play are:
- Bali, Indonesia (96.7%)
- Phuket, Thailand (93%)
- Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia (92.2%)
- Osaka, Japan (90.8%)
