Ice Age: Collision Course – this is Ice Age movie number… ?

I just watched the preview screening for the latest Ice Age movie, Ice Age: Collision Course. Do you know how many Ice Age movies there are in the franchise to date?

When will  the sabre-toothed squirrel, Scrat’s relentless pursuit of his beloved acorn stop being funny?

In this latest installation, Scrat already traveled to outer space with his beloved acorn and are together, responsible for a chain of major events with impact on the universe as we know it.

How much further can the story go? Judging from the current Ice Age movie number five (yes, there are five Ice Age movies already), it seems there is still a lot of creative room for more movies to be added into the franchise.

Synopsis for Ice Age: Collision Course

Scrat’s epic pursuit of his elusive acorn catapults him outside of Earth, where he accidentally sets off a series of cosmic events that transform and threaten the planet. To save themselves from peril, Manny, Sid, Diego, and the rest of the herd leave their home and embark on a quest full of thrills and spills, highs and lows, laughter and adventure while traveling to exotic new lands and encountering a host of colorful new characters.

For those familiar with the previous Ice Age movies, expect more of the same chemistry from the usual pool of lead characters as well as lots of witty one-liner jokes and sketch comedy.

For those watching an Ice Age movie for the first time, you will still be able to enjoy the movie as the storyline is simple enough to follow – characters face the prospect of extinction, they have to go on a mission together to fight for their survival. In this movie, they have to fend off a meteorite attack.

For my son Asher, this is the first time he is watching an Ice Age movie in the cinema and he seems to enjoy it throughly.

The movie was educational for him. He learnt about meteorites and how powerful they are as well as some knowledge about the universe and the solar system. He was quizzing Rachel and I about the universe, meteorites and volcanoes after we left the cinemas.

I heard a lot of children laughing loudly at the various skits, particularly those involving Scrat. This is the reason why I think the franchise can still go far. The same characters that amused us when we were younger are still able to amuse the new, younger audiences. Sketch comedy transcend time and languages. Think Charlie Chaplin.

Ice Age: Collision Course opens in Singapore cinemas from 30 June (tomorrow) – the perfect movie to round up the June holiday for kids. Go catch it. 🙂
