Mas Selamat Dexter?

Is it socially ethical to run an ad campaign spoofing the Mas Selamat Kastari wanted posters? These spoof posters were put up around Singapore by Foxcrime to promote their TV series, Dexter. You can read more about it on omy.

The escape of Mas Selamat Kastari, the leader of the Singapore Jemaah Islamiyah, from the Internal Security Department’s Whitley Road Detention Detention Centre on 27 February, 2008, is a national shame to Singapore. This spoof poster is further rubbing salt into the wound by spoofing something which is already treated as a running joke on many online blogs and forums. Funny it may be, but I am actually quite surprised that the regulatory bodies for advertising in Singapore allowed this.

Here’s the copy on the poster (via Jac):

CRIME NOTICE
WATCH FOXCRIME immediately to see him
Dexter Morgan

Dexter Morgan is 1.75m tall, well-built and may come across as charming and personable. He has been known to inject his victims with an opioid, trapping them with cellophane before killing his victims with a knife. He leads a double life as a Blood Splatter Analyst at the Police Department.

Watch DEXTER on FOXCRIME (Starhub Channel 86) every Monday at 10pm, from 16 June to see how he operates. Anyone who misses DEXTER, TV’s favourite serial killer is committing a grave offence.
