How rich are you? - Alvinology

How rich are you?

There’s this Chinese saying that goes 比上不足比下有余 – loosely translated as “if you think you are bad compared to others; there is always another group worse off than you”.

Do you always think that you are broke? That money never seems to be enough? That there must be lots of others out leading a better life than you?

I do.

Which is why we need web tools like this. It is reassuring to know that my income puts me comfortably in the upper quarter of the world population. At the same time, it is a bit disconcerting to know that also means 75 percent of the world population is worse off than a simple guy like me.

Show me the Money

According to the site – I’m the 552,869,541 richest person on earth.

I will be the optimist and be happy with the figure. It’s not a very high ranking to rant about, but there are many others worse off.

  1. This is quite an eye-opener. I only put my income as a part-time worker which is only around S$3500 per year, and it puts me at the top 20% of wealth in the rich list…

    898,828,024… lower than yours Alvin…

And it’s so scary, that there are many others in the whole entire world who aren’t as well off and you and I. And I’m only working part-time for goodness sake. I knew that Singapore was an almost-developed country (Geography teachers demanded Singapore hasn’t reached the 5th level of development) but I didn’t know that we have that much money!

And here we have teenagers blogging about, “Oh, I want money, I want to buy more clothes etc.” If only they realise that wanting money is a shallow reflection of their ego needs…
