YASHICA Teases Y16 Pocket Camera, Bringing a 1959 Classic Into the Digital Age

YASHICA is bringing one of its classic camera designs into the digital era with the upcoming Y16 Pocket Camera, a compact model inspired by the company’s original Y16 camera from 1959.

The new camera is designed around the idea of preserving, refining and reimagining YASHICA’s heritage. While retaining the compact form and character of the original Y16, the new model introduces features aimed at contemporary photography enthusiasts who want a portable camera for everyday shooting, travel, social sharing and personal storytelling.

Among its confirmed features are a three-level Xenon flash system, an optical viewfinder enhanced with motion sensing technology and a 12-megapixel image sensor. The Y16 Pocket Camera will support both photography and video capture.

The Xenon flash system is designed to provide greater flexibility in different lighting conditions, while encouraging users to experiment with flash photography. The motion sensing technology incorporated into the optical viewfinder is another modern addition to the heritage inspired design.

YASHICA has not yet revealed the camera’s full specifications, with additional details expected closer to launch. The company says the Y16 Pocket Camera is intended to balance the appeal of traditional camera design with the usability and creative possibilities expected from a modern compact camera.

The Y16 Pocket Camera will be available in seven colour options, giving users the opportunity to choose a finish that reflects their personal style.

The upcoming camera continues YASHICA’s recent focus on bringing designs from its archives to a new generation. The company previously introduced the YASHICA FX D through Kickstarter, drawing inspiration from the YASHICA FX 3 film camera.

The Y16 also builds on the response to YASHICA Funtastic, the company’s series of compact keychain cameras. According to YASHICA, the popularity of those highly portable cameras highlighted interest in photography products that are easy to carry and designed around everyday use.

The Y16 Pocket Camera expands on that concept with a larger creative platform while retaining a pocket friendly form factor and a design inspired by YASHICA’s history.

YASHICA is expected to announce further details about the Y16 Pocket Camera, including its full specifications, pricing and availability, in early October 2026. Pre orders are currently expected to open in October, with first deliveries targeted for early November 2026.
