Japan’s top yakitori chain Torikizoku recently made its Singapore debut at VivoCity on 29 May. Set to be its largest outlet in the world, the 174 seat space features both an indoor restaurant and an alfresco dining area overlooking the promenade.

Founded in Osaka by visionary entrepreneur Tadashi Okura in 1985, the brand has grown into one of Japan most recognisable culinary institutions. The founder holds a simple belief that food has the power to bring people joy. Today, his broader ambition is to elevate yakitori to the same level of global recognition and love as sushi. We attended the exclusive media preview last week ahead of the soft opening on 29 May and the grand launch on 15 June.

The key appeal of this establishment is its commitment to quality Japanese dining at accessible prices. Torikizoku keeps all food and non alcoholic drinks at a flat S$3.90 per item.

This flat pricing model keeps in line with their famous 390 yen menu in Japan, and we honestly do not know how they make money with such low prices in Singapore’s high cost business environment. For those looking to indulge further, kids meals and alcoholic drinks are priced at S$9.90. Nothing is over S$10 here!

We started our lunch tasting session with a refreshing Soda Water (S$3.90) and a crisp Cabbage Salad (S$3.90) to awaken our palates before diving into the mains.

Yakitori naturally takes center stage. A mandatory order is the Signature Kizokuyaki Thigh (Sauce) (S$3.90). These signature jumbo skewers are twice the size of the average skewer. The juicy chicken thigh is skewered with pieces of leek and glazed in a rich sauce.

Our personal favorite was the Tail (Salt) (S$3.90). The rich morsels came with an extra crunch and were lightly seasoned to highlight the natural flavour of the chicken.

We also enjoyed the crispy Skin (Salt) (S$3.90), the tender Tenderloin With Grated Wasabi (Salt) (S$3.90), and the succulent Drumette (Sauce) (S$3.90). Every plate delivers two skewers for the flat price. At this price point, it is incredibly worth it to order generously and share. Go with a group of friends or your family to share!

Beyond the skewers, the menu shines with its comforting mains.

The Chicken Broth Ramen (S$3.90) is an absolute steal, delivering a comforting bowl of noodles that would easily cost much more elsewhere.

The Chicken Kamameshi (Japanese Claypot Rice) (S$3.90) is another highly recommended dish and a top seller in Japan.

Served in a traditional pot and cooked right at the table, the dish brings together rice, chicken, and vegetables for a satisfying comfort meal.

We think pairing a comforting bowl of ramen or claypot rice with a plate or two of skewers is the best way to dine here.

To complement the meal, we tried the Grilled Fluffy Grated Yam (S$3.90), another signature item which is delightfully light and airy in texture.

The Fried Squid (S$3.90) and the Chicken Nanban (S$3.90) rounded out our extensive spread.

While the food is not exactly fine dining standard yakitori, it excels brilliantly at providing incredible value and satisfaction. Torikizoku promises a warm, easygoing and welcoming atmosphere that perfectly suits after work gatherings or casual meals with friends.

For an added touch of fun, patrons visiting between 15 to 30 June get to participate in a 3.9 Seconds Challenge upon check out. Diners who stop the clock at exactly 3.90 seconds will enjoy a complimentary meal with their entire bill waived.
