Japan’s viral thick-cut tonkatsu has officially made its way to Singapore, with Tonkatsu ENbiton bringing the internet-famous pork cutlets from screen to table. Known for its indulgent thickness and crisp golden crust, the dish is now available across all Tonkatsu ENbiton outlets, giving diners here a chance to experience one of Japan’s most talked-about comfort foods in person.
The first thing that stands out when the dish arrives is the size. The Signature Thick-cut Katsu really is no joke at 5cm thick. It is visibly substantial, sliced cleanly into pieces that hold their shape but still look tender in the middle. The crust is golden and airy, using nama panko that gives a noticeably lighter crunch compared to heavier breadcrumb styles.
Taste-wise, the pork is rich without being overwhelming. The cut leans into a balanced meat-to-fat ratio, so each bite carries a bit of juiciness without turning heavy. What surprised me most was the texture. Despite the thickness, it is not tough at all. It has that soft resistance you expect from a well-executed katsu, where the meat still holds structure but breaks apart cleanly.
The set version really lets the cutlet take centre stage. The 5cm-thick katsu sits on its own with rice, shredded cabbage, pickles, and tonjiru on the side. The cabbage adds a fresh crunch that helps cut through the richness, while the pickles give a light sharp contrast between bites. The tonjiru rounds things off with a savoury depth that makes the whole set feel more balanced, especially when eaten alongside the pork.
The don version feels more comforting and cohesive. The same thick-cut katsu is placed over rice and topped with egg, which softens the texture and adds a gentle creaminess throughout. Everything comes together in each spoonful, making it feel less separated and more like a complete, homely bowl. It is slightly richer overall, but in a smoother and more comforting way compared to the set.
Portion-wise, it is quite filling, especially if you go for the full size. The half portion is probably more manageable if you are planning to explore other items on the menu. I also appreciated that the sides are not just filler. The cabbage adds freshness, while the tonjiru helps balance the richness of the pork quite well.
