Every year around WrestleMania season, a new WWE game drops, and for wrestling fans it feels like stepping back into the squared circle again.
For the new WWE 2K26 on the PS5, as a childhood WWE fan, I found myself drawn in by the nostalgia. From classic legends to modern superstars, the roster is massive and it quickly becomes a playground for dream matches that would never happen in real life, creating matches between the like of the late Yokozuna and CM Punk.
The huge roster is a main draw. With more than 400 superstars and legends available at launch, there is an incredible range of wrestlers to choose from. It was fun scrolling through the list and seeing icons from different eras. I could easily set up a match between legends like Hulk Hogan and modern stars such as John Cena. For longtime wrestling fans, that kind of crossover appeal is one of the biggest joys of the game.
In the ring, WWE 2K26 plays very similarly to the past few entries in the series. The developers have mostly focused on refining the mechanics rather than reinventing them. Matches feel slightly more strategic thanks to a revamped stamina system. If a wrestler becomes exhausted, certain moves like running or reversing attacks temporarily become unavailable. This adds a layer of risk and pacing to matches that encourages players to think more carefully about when to attack or defend.
The gameplay itself still feels satisfying. Grapples, strikes and signature moves have a nice sense of weight, and the improved collision physics make interactions with the environment more entertaining. Throwing an opponent into the ropes or slamming them onto steel steps feels a little more dynamic than before. It does not drastically change how matches play out, but it adds to the chaotic fun that wrestling games are known for.
The match variety also helps keep things interesting. Several classic match types return, including Inferno matches, Dumpster matches and the brutal I Quit match. While some of these modes feel similar to existing match formats, they still add flavour to the overall experience and give players more ways to experiment inside the ring.
One of the centrepieces this year is the Showcase mode focused on CM Punk.
The mode revisits key moments from his WWE career while also exploring some alternate “what if” scenarios. These fantasy matchups can be entertaining, especially for fans who enjoy imagining dream bouts between different generations of wrestlers.
Beyond Showcase, WWE 2K26 still offers a large selection of modes such as MyRise, MyGM, Universe and MyFaction. These modes provide plenty to do if you enjoy building your own wrestling universe or managing weekly shows to experience how it is like to be a McMahon. Small improvements like draft mechanics in Universe mode and expanded match options give players more control over how their shows unfold.
Overall presentation remains impressive. On the PS5, the visuals are sharp and detailed. Wrestler models look convincing, arenas are packed with atmosphere, and the entrances capture the spectacle of WWE television. Being able to trigger pyrotechnics during entrances is a fun touch that adds a little extra personality to the showmanship.
Taken as a whole, WWE 2K26 feels like another safe step for the series rather than a dramatic leap forward.
For me, the biggest takeaway was simply how enjoyable it is to jump into quick matches and experiment with the enormous roster. There is something inherently entertaining about pitting wrestlers from completely different eras against each other and seeing what kind of chaos unfolds in the ring.
WWE 2K26 may not completely reinvent the franchise, but it still a wrestling sandbox filled with legends, dream matches and plenty of over the top action, delivering exactly what many fans are looking for. If you grew up watching wrestling and still enjoy stepping into the ring virtually, there is a lot of nostalgic fun to be found here.
