Leica Camera AG is marking a major cultural milestone in 2026 as it celebrates 50 years of the Leica Galleries, a global network dedicated to showcasing photography as art, historical record and social commentary.

The journey began in April 1976 with the opening of the first Leica Gallery at the company’s headquarters in Wetzlar, Germany. What started as a single exhibition space has since evolved into an international network of 26 galleries across key cultural cities worldwide, hosting approximately 150 exhibitions annually.
A Half-Century of Photographic Excellence
To commemorate the golden jubilee, a major anniversary exhibition will be held in June 2026 at the Leica Gallery Wetzlar. All current Leica Gallery directors were invited to nominate photographers for the showcase, resulting in a curated collection of 50 images by selected artists, one for each year of the gallery’s history.
The exhibition spans the full spectrum of Leica photography, from intimate human moments to powerful documentary narratives and bold creative expressions, underscoring the brand’s longstanding commitment to visual storytelling.
From Wetzlar to the World

The original Leica Gallery concept was launched within the foyer of the administrative building of Ernst Leitz GmbH, featuring travel photography by German photographer Paul Gluske. Following the company’s relocation in 1988, the concept continued at Leica Gallery Solms and gradually expanded into a monthly exhibition programme.
The 1990s and early 2000s saw international expansion through collaborations with local Leica companies and partners. Galleries were established in cities such as New York (1994), Prague (2002), Frankfurt (2004), São Paulo and Melbourne (2005), and Tokyo’s Ginza district (2006).
Today, Leica Galleries can be found in 26 cultural metropolises including Amsterdam, Boston, Kyoto, London, Los Angeles, Madrid, Milan, Mexico City, Paris, Taipei and Vienna. In Germany alone, seven galleries operate, including locations in Frankfurt, Munich and Stuttgart alongside Wetzlar. Chicago and Shanghai are set to join the network this year, further strengthening Leica’s global footprint.
Celebrating Masters and Emerging Voices
Over five decades, Leica Galleries have hosted countless iconic exhibitions, featuring works by renowned photographers such as Henri Cartier-Bresson, Sebastião Salgado, Elliott Erwitt, and Steve McCurry, among many others.
The galleries have also showcased work from prominent creative figures beyond traditional photojournalism, including Bryan Adams and Lenny Kravitz, reinforcing Leica’s cross-disciplinary cultural reach.
A key highlight of the annual exhibition programme is the Leica Oskar Barnack Award series, which honours outstanding photographic storytelling and continues to spotlight both established masters and promising new talent.
Photography in the Age of AI
As Leica Galleries look toward the future, they are expanding beyond traditional exhibition formats. Alongside lectures and curated showcases, new approaches addressing the role of artificial intelligence in photography are becoming increasingly important.
Despite the rapid pace of digital transformation, Leica remains committed to authentic photography and critical discourse. The galleries aim to foster open dialogue around visual truth, ethics and storytelling, ensuring photography remains a relevant and powerful medium in contemporary society.
Photography enthusiasts can also purchase works exhibited at Leica Galleries, including the Leica Picture of the Year, which honours recipients of the Leica Hall of Fame Award.
