Sentosa Unveils ‘Peranakan Reimagined’ Showcase to Celebrate SG60 and Singapore Cable Car Anniversary

This summer, Sentosa transforms into a vibrant cultural playground as Sentosa Development Corporation (SDC) and Mount Faber Leisure Group (MFLG) launch Peranakan Reimagined — a bold celebration of heritage through a contemporary lens. Running from 23 May to 31 August 2025, this immersive island-wide showcase marks both Singapore’s SG60 milestone and the 10th anniversary of the Singapore Cable Car – Sentosa Line.

A Sensory Celebration of Peranakan Culture

Anchored at Sensoryscape, the experience invites guests to rediscover Peranakan heritage through a fusion of art, design, storytelling, and cuisine. The centrepiece? The Peranakan House — a stunning 7.2-metre-tall installation that morphs from a colourful daytime photo spot into a dazzling projection-mapped canvas at night, weaving tales of traditional Peranakan life through multimedia artistry.

At Tactile Trellis, the Field of Beaded Blooms dazzles with 198 panels inspired by the beadwork of kasut manek (beaded slippers), alongside a giant slipper sculpture you can actually touch. By night, digital batik light shows further enchant visitors. Along The Walkway, iconic Peranakan elements like kamcheng jars, ornate teapots, and wedding baskets appear as oversized art installations — with sequinned surprises only visible through a phone lens.

The showcase also spans the other gardens of Sensoryscape, offering engaging experiences featuring Peranakan fashion (like the kebaya), culinary displays with partner-contributed recipes, musical instruments, and more — all designed to awaken the senses and celebrate heritage in modern ways.

In honour of the Sentosa Line’s 10th year, cable car cabins now sport Peranakan-inspired designs in pastel hues and intricate motifs, reminiscent of Koon Seng Road’s heritage shophouses. Curated by Baba Alvin Yapp of The Intan, these “flying galleries” offer a sky-high glimpse into the celebration below.

Locals can also enjoy special 1-for-1 promotions from 23 May to 31 August, including round trips for two at just $4, and unlimited day rides for two at $14 — exclusively at the Sensoryscape Station Ticketing Counter and Guest Service Centre.

Featuring eight reinvented kebayas by designers like Ratianah Tahir, Kavita Thulasidas, Ada Goh, and Baba Raymond Wong, the showcase includes highlights like the Kebaya Biku from Emerald Hill – The Little Nyonya Story.

Visitors can also enjoy a kebaya dress-up experience and shop for traditional pieces and souvenirs at the Sentosa Shop @ Sensoryscape.

At Siloso Point Station, giant tiffin carrier sculptures and oversized Nyonya kueh installations bring heritage to life, while weekend craft workshops offer hands-on activities like clay kueh-making and embroidery, inspired by The Intan’s collection.

Island-Wide Peranakan Offerings

Throughout the season, Peranakan Sayang will fill Sensoryscape with vibrant live music, and the monthly Sentosa Festive Market at Palawan Beach Walk will feature Peranakan-inspired workshops. Dining promotions and cultural deals will also be available across the island.

Sentosa Islander members can enjoy added perks, including a pair of free cable car tickets with a minimum spend of $40 at participating outlets until 31 August 2025.

A Cultural Tapestry for SG60

Made possible through collaborations with cultural champions like The Intan, Rumah Kim Choo, and The Peranakan Association Singapore, Peranakan Reimagined is a heartfelt tribute to Singapore’s multicultural identity. With its modern twist on tradition, the showcase invites every generation to connect with the Peranakan story — one sense at a time.
