Discover Serenity at the New Mandai Boardwalk in Singapore

The Mandai Boardwalk officially opened to the public on January 14, 2025, adding a new gem to Singapore’s offerings for nature enthusiasts. Spanning 3.3 kilometers, this scenic boardwalk runs along the edge of the Upper Seletar Reservoir and the Central Catchment Nature Reserve, creating an idyllic escape for anyone seeking tranquility amidst lush greenery.

Minister of State for Trade and Industry & Culture, Community and Youth, Mr Alvin Tan (centre) officially opened the Mandai Boardwalk on 14 January 2025. The launch ceremony was held at Lizard’s Lounge – one of the five thematic stations along the boardwalk. This wheelchair-friendly boardwalk meanders around River Wonders and the Singapore Zoo, offering breathtaking views, peaceful wildlife observation opportunities, and glimpses of animals within the zoo’s care. The best part? Entry is free, with the boardwalk open daily from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Celebrating Ecosystem Connections

Designed to celebrate the harmony between forest and water ecosystems, the Mandai Boardwalk features five thematic stations and a lookout point inspired by the native wildlife. Highlights include:

Thematic stations and look-out points like the Iora’s Nest provide one of the best views of Upper Seletar Reservoir. The Mandai Boardwalk is free for the public to access. This amenity offers charming views of the Upper Seletar Reservoir, but away from the more ecologically sensitive stretches of shoreline that are closer to the Central Catchment Nature Reserve. The boardwalk was constructed around the mature trees on the site and is elevated to protect the bank of the reservoir where native animals move below. A low impact construction technique was used to minimise the use of heavy equipment. Photo credit: Mandai Wildlife Group
  • Tree Frog’s Hangout: A tribute to the four-lined tree frog, native to the area.
  • Damselfly’s Wing: A rest station with designs inspired by damselflies and dragonflies.
  • Iora’s Nest: Showcasing the ingenuity of the Common Iora, whose nests are woven with spider webs.

These stations aim to connect visitors with the wonders of nature while preserving the delicate balance of the environment.

Eco-Friendly Design and Accessibility

In keeping with sustainable practices, the boardwalk was constructed with minimal impact on the surrounding ecosystem. Elevated pathways ensure that native animals can move freely below, while enhancements to water-edge vegetation encourage biodiversity, attracting birds, butterflies, and dragonflies. Construction also avoided harm to mature trees and used low-impact techniques to maintain the area’s natural charm.

A Landmark Opening

The Mandai Boardwalk’s opening was marked by a commemorative plaque unveiling by Mr. Alvin Tan, Minister of State for Trade and Industry, and Culture, Community and Youth, who enjoyed a scenic stroll with Mandai Wildlife Group’s Chairman, Mr. Piyush Gupta, and other dignitaries.

Visitors can enjoy the Mandai Boardwalk for free via Mandai Wildlife East where they are greeted by a larger-than-life Pangolin Mother & Child sculpture. A second entrance to the boardwalk is next to River Wonders. Visitors can access the boardwalk from two points: near the River Wonders entrance and Mandai Wildlife East. This vibrant hub is set to become a gateway to exciting attractions like the upcoming Mandai Rainforest Resort by Banyan Tree, Curiosity Cove, and Exploria. It will also feature playgrounds and dining options, making it a must-visit destination.
