From October 4 to December 4, 2024, OPEN END: Resonate, Re-Read and Re-Trace The Substation Archive brings the legacy of Singapore’s first independent contemporary arts space, The Substation, to life. Held at the Rotunda Library & Archive in the National Gallery Singapore, the exhibition features captivating works by artists Chong Li-Chuan and Urich Lau, alongside curator Adrian Tan, creating an immersive exploration of The Substation’s history.
Through text-based compositions, video installations, and soundscapes, OPEN END weaves together archival materials—publications, exhibition catalogues, and ephemera—to offer fresh interpretations of The Substation’s impact on Singapore’s arts scene. The exhibition transforms the typically quiet archive space into a dynamic, interactive environment that invites visitors to engage critically with its contents.
Complementing the exhibition are public programmes, including curator-led tours and artist panels, offering deeper insight into how the artworks reveal the complexities of archival materials and invite new perspectives on The Substation’s story.
