The Travel Test: How Gen Z and Millennials in Singapore Navigate Love on the Road

Travel is more than just a hobby for Singaporeans—it’s a crucial factor in their relationships. A new survey by Bumble and Klook reveals that nearly seven in ten Gen Z and Millennial Singaporeans might reconsider their relationships after traveling together. Conducted in June 2024 with 1,000 participants aged 18-43, the Roam-ance Study explores the strong link between travel compatibility and romantic success.

Travel Compatibility Equals Romantic Compatibility

For many Singaporeans, travel discussions are a must when getting to know a potential partner. In fact, 82% mention past or future trips during conversations on dating apps or in person. Travel-related badges like “City Breaks” and “Beaches” are among the most popular on Bumble, signaling common interests early on.

The Make-or-Break First Trip

Taking a trip together is a significant milestone, and it can make or break a relationship. Almost 73% of respondents admit that traveling with a partner could change their opinion of them. In fact, 17% have ended relationships due to bad travel experiences. Given the potential risks, 60% of Singaporeans prefer to wait at least six months before planning a trip with a partner, with 21% waiting a full year.

Travel Challenges and Dealbreakers

Traveling together can expose differences, especially in budgeting and spending habits—a dealbreaker for 45% of respondents. Emotional stability in crisis situations (41%) and conflicting living habits (31%) are also key factors that could derail a relationship. Gen Z, in particular, is more sensitive to financial habits, likely due to their early career stages or time in school.

Overcoming Travel Differences

Despite potential pitfalls, many couples find ways to navigate travel differences:

  1. Discuss Preferences Early: 65% of Singaporeans address travel expectations early in their relationships.
  2. Share Planning Responsibilities: 57% prefer to split the planning workload, though Klook’s data shows women handle 62% of bookings.
  3. Balance and Compromise: 68% of Singaporeans believe in compromising to ensure both partners enjoy the trip.

Ideal Getaways for Couples

The ideal couples’ trip for 58% of respondents is a quick weekend getaway. Popular nearby destinations include Johor Bahru, Bali, Bangkok, and Chiang Mai. Relaxing vacations, cultural experiences, and hidden gems are also favored. Gen Zs lean more toward thrilling adventures like bungee jumping and cultural immersion.

Solo Travel and Mingling Abroad

While cautious, 18% of Singaporeans are open to using dating apps while traveling to meet new people, with men more likely to do so than women.

To inspire your next adventure, Bumble and Klook are offering exclusive discounts for Bumble users until December 31, 2024.
