The National Youth Film Awards (NYFA) is set to transform into the Singapore Youth Film Festival (SYFF) in 2024, marking a new chapter in celebrating young filmmaking talent in Singapore. Organized by *SCAPE in partnership with the Singapore International Film Festival (SGIFF), the SYFF will be a two-week-long event featuring screenings, conference sessions, and an award ceremony.
Developing a Thriving Community of Filmmakers and Film Lovers
Through its collaboration with SGIFF, SYFF leverages SGIFF’s extensive local and international network, providing young filmmakers with opportunities to connect with seasoned industry professionals. SYFF will continue to honor young filmmakers with various awards and offer invaluable exposure through workshops, talks, and networking events.
In an effort to build a broader community of local film enthusiasts, SYFF will host a series of public and ticketed screenings. A special showcase, known as the SYFF Capsule, will feature films from the past nine editions of NYFA, including Calleen Koh’s “Sexy Sushi” and Tan Wei Ting’s “Ca$h,” both internationally recognized works. These screenings will be part of *SCAPE’s Nightflix Somerset monthly film screenings.
For the first time, nominated films of SYFF 2024 will be accessible to the public through SYFF Cinema, a new initiative aimed at helping the public discover and appreciate the outstanding works of young filmmakers.
SYFF Ambassadors and Industry Engagement
SYFF 2024 will introduce a lineup of SYFF ambassadors—accomplished filmmakers who were once NYFA nominees. These ambassadors will share their knowledge and experience, inspiring and guiding aspiring filmmakers through various roles, including panel discussions, jury duties, and school sharing sessions.
SYFF Award Ceremony: Celebrating Youth Filmmakers
Continuing the tradition of previous years, SYFF 2024 will present 20 awards across the Student and Open Youth categories, with up to 60 films shortlisted for accolades such as Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best Editing, and Best Original Music.
The festival will conclude with the annual Bloc Party, providing an exclusive opportunity for young filmmakers to network with industry experts and fellow filmmakers.
Stay tuned for more updates as SYFF 2024 promises to be a landmark event for the youth filmmaking community in Singapore.
