RISE: Sentosa Unveils New Interactive Exhibits Showcasing Islandwide Sustainability Efforts

Sentosa Development Corporation (SDC) has launched RISE, a new sustainability showcase at Sentosa Beach Station, running until December 2024. RISE, which stands for “Rallying Island Sustainability Efforts,” aims to educate and engage visitors about the island’s sustainability initiatives through a series of interactive exhibits.

Island-Wide Collaboration in Sustainability

RISE highlights the collective efforts of the Sentosa Carbon Neutral Network (SCNN), an alliance of island businesses committed to achieving carbon neutrality by 2030. Since the launch of the Sustainable Sentosa roadmap in 2021, SCNN members—including resorts, hotels, attractions, and dining establishments—have collaborated on various initiatives like decarbonization and waste management.

The exhibits at RISE demonstrate these efforts using repurposed materials from SCNN members:

  • W Hotel – Sentosa Cove: 1388 phased-out plastic bottles serve as backdrops.
  • Shangri-La Rasa Sentosa: 338 discarded amenity kit bottles form an installation display.
  • Resorts World Sentosa and Shangri-La Rasa Sentosa: 48 end-of-life bedsheets and 18 used juice bottles are transformed into a seagrass and marine life installation.

These exhibits underscore Sentosa’s commitment to environmental sustainability and illustrate how waste from the hospitality sector can be reduced or recycled.

Interactive Exhibits and Workshops

RISE features a variety of interactive exhibits, art installations, and workshops that spotlight key sustainability initiatives implemented over the past three years. These initiatives include solar energy adoption, recycling programs, electric vehicle usage, farm-to-table practices, waste management, and marine habitat conservation.

Key exhibits include:

  • miniTrashLab1 Upcycling Workshop: Guests can participate in an upcycling workshop where they create customized sunglasses from plastic waste, including decommissioned Luge carts and kayaks. This workshop, priced at $59.90, is a collaboration with Miniwiz, an upcycling technology specialist.
  • 3D Pledge Installation: Visitors and staff can pledge their commitment to sustainability by writing on repurposed expired banners.

These creative collaborations with sustainability advocates like Woo Qiyun (@theweirdandwild) and miniature artists Celeste (@tingcorner) and Anthony Ong (@likeants) bring the initiatives to life, highlighting the innovative efforts towards sustainability.

Reinforcing Sentosa’s Commitment

Through RISE, Sentosa aims to raise awareness about lesser-known sustainability efforts and provide practical tips for adopting environmentally-conscious lifestyles and travel habits. The showcase encourages guests to eat, play, and travel more sustainably, supporting the Singapore Green Plan 2030 to build a sustainable future for both Singaporeans and global visitors.
