Orchids of Angkor Wat: Explore the Enchanting World of Cambodian Orchids at Cloud Forest’s New Display

Dive into the captivating world of Cambodian orchids at Cloud Forest’s latest exhibit, “Orchids of Angkor Wat.” This stunning display, inspired by the Khmer Empire, features over 50 unique orchid species and hybrids from Cambodia, including the intriguing slipper orchid and the ever-surprising Vandachostylis.

The Slipper Orchid: A Master of Deception

The slipper orchid, with its pouch-like sepal resembling a lady’s slipper, practices a fascinating form of “pollination by deceit.” The orchid’s vibrant colors lure insects onto its slippery surface, causing them to fall into the pouch. As they scramble to escape, they inadvertently carry pollen grains with them. Despite their efforts, the insects receive no reward, not even food, making this orchid’s pollination method truly unique.

Unusual Orchids on Display

The exhibit features a variety of captivating orchids, including:

  • Vandachostylis: Known for its unpredictable progeny, each offspring of this hybrid can look quite different depending on the dominant parent genus.
  • Dendrobium Adastra: Admire its profuse, drooping blooms that create a stunning “waterfall of flowers,” a sight rarely seen in Singapore’s climate.

These orchids, native to Cambodia or hybrids tracing their lineage back to Cambodian species, are showcased against a backdrop that celebrates the country’s rich natural history and cultural heritage.

A Cultural and Historical Journey

The “Orchids of Angkor Wat” display, a collaboration with the Royal Embassy of Cambodia in Singapore, was launched by Senior Parliamentary Secretary Eric Chua and His Excellency Sok Khoeun, Ambassador of Cambodia to Singapore. The exhibit runs from May 17 to September 8, 2024, at Cloud Forest, Gardens by the Bay.

The display features a 3.5-meter-tall replica of Angkor Wat, offering visitors a glimpse of the iconic temple complex. Flanked by Cambodia’s national palm trees and vibrant orchids, the exhibit also includes a recreation of the gateway to Angkor Thom, complete with devas (gods) lining the walkway.

Five stone replicas, on loan from Artisans Angkor, depict scenes from significant Cambodian architecture, including the walls of Angkor Thom and the Bayon temple. These replicas showcase daily life and divine scenes from the Khmer Empire, highlighting the intricate craftsmanship of Cambodian artisans.
