Exciting news resonates through Singapore’s sports community as Sport Singapore (SportSG) unveils its inaugural cohort of 48 SpexPotential athletes. This significant milestone marks the expansion of support for athletes within Singapore’s High Performance Sports (HPS) system through the Sport Excellence Scholarship (spexScholarship) and the newly introduced Sport Excellence Potential (SpexPotential) programs.
The spexScholarship, a cornerstone of Singapore’s HPS system since its inception in 2013, continues to provide financial and programmatic backing for athletes. This year, 103 new spexScholars join the program across 26 sports, including ten athletes representing nine sports who receive the scholarship for the first time.
Acknowledging the pivotal role of spexScholars in elevating Singapore’s sporting prowess, statistics reveal their significant contribution to medal tallies. Despite comprising just 10% of Team Singapore’s contingent at the 2023 SEA Games, spexScholars contributed a staggering 52% of the medal tally. A similar trend emerged at the 2022 Asian Games, where they constituted 14% of the contingent but contributed 62% of the medal tally.
To further nurture talent and drive success, the spexPotential program emerges as a beacon for aspiring athletes. Introduced in August 2023, this initiative focuses on preparing athletes for high-performance outcomes, starting from the youth-to-senior transition phase. The program aims to identify and support young athletes with the potential to excel at the SEA Games level and beyond.
48 promising athletes across 22 sports join the spexPotential program, receiving holistic support to propel their sporting journey. From financial assistance for coaching, training, and equipment to education and career development support, SpexPotential athletes are equipped for success on and off the field.
Beyond these initiatives, SportSG remains committed to providing comprehensive support for national athletes through various spex programs such as spexBusiness, spexEducation, spexGLOW (Grant for Loss of Wages), and spexTAG (Training Assistant Grant), ensuring their holistic development throughout their sporting careers.
With the unveiling of the inaugural SpexPotential cohort, Singapore’s sports landscape witnesses a new chapter in fostering talent and achieving excellence on the global stage. As these athletes embark on their journey, they carry with them the hopes and aspirations of a nation united in its passion for sports.
