To empower its self-employed riders and their families, Deliveroo Singapore has expanded its Rider Academy, providing access to over 1,500 free courses. This initiative, in collaboration with online education platform Lynx Educate, aims to enhance the skill sets of Deliveroo riders, aligning with Singapore’s emphasis on upskilling for sustained economic productivity.

Singapore’s government has been vocal about the importance of upskilling in driving productivity growth, particularly in the face of technological advancements. The recently launched SkillsFuture Level-Up programme, announced during this year’s budget, underscores this commitment to enhancing employability through continuous learning.

Recognizing the pivotal role of upskilling in maintaining economic competitiveness, Deliveroo’s partnership with Lynx Educate seeks to bridge the gap by offering a diverse range of courses from esteemed institutions such as The Open University, OpenClassrooms, and Chegg Skills. This initiative caters to the evolving needs of Deliveroo riders, enabling them to pursue courses in business management, coding, data science, project management, photography, and more.

Moreover, the Deliveroo Rider Academy will facilitate access to advanced vocational and academic courses, empowering riders and their families to attain higher qualifications. Notably, this opportunity extends beyond riders themselves, as family members can also benefit from the sponsored courses, showcasing Deliveroo’s commitment to fostering growth and development within its community.

The initiative has garnered significant interest among Deliveroo riders, with over 600 courses completed since the launch of the Rider Academy in 2019. Digital skills, in particular, have emerged as a priority, reflecting Singapore’s aspirations to become a Smart Nation. Courses such as ‘Learn Python Basics for Data Analysis’, ‘Build Your First Web Pages with HTML and CSS’, and ‘Discover Digital Marketing’ have resonated strongly with riders, highlighting their enthusiasm for acquiring new skills.

Muhamad Rashid, a 31-year-old Deliveroo rider who also works as a Quick Response Officer in the security industry, exemplifies the spirit of lifelong learning. Having dedicated over 700 hours to OpenClassrooms courses over the past two years, Rashid emphasizes the importance of continuous education in future-proofing his career.

In addition to short courses, riders can pursue six-month intensive scholarship programs offered by OpenClassrooms, equivalent to an associate degree level of education. This initiative underscores the ambition and dedication of Deliveroo riders towards continuous personal and professional development.
