[Review + Pre-order Link] Honor Magic 6 Pro: A First Look at Honor’s Flagship Smartphone, Loaded with AI Features and Silicon-carbon Battery

Honor, the Chinese tech company, may not yet be as ubiquitous as Apple or Samsung, but its latest offering, the Magic 6 Pro, is poised to make a significant impact on the global smartphone market, including in Singapore.

The brand was founded in 2013 as a Huawei sub-brand to compete in the mid-range smartphone markets in China and globally. It has since been sold off in November 2020 and has grown rapidly to establish its presence in the ultra-competitive Android smartphone market. While Huawei phones continue to be locked out of the Android eco-system, Honor phones are not and are proving to a strong challenger brand to the more established players like Samsung.

Debuting at the 2024 Mobile World Congress (MWC), the Honor Magic 6 Pro stands out as the world’s first phone outside China to feature a silicon-carbon battery, boasting environmental benefits and reduced risk of overheating compared to conventional lithium-ion batteries.

It is also loaded with promising AI features, a glimpse into things to come in the new generation of smartphone innovations.

One of its standout features is the innovative and sci-fi-like AI eye-tracking technology, allowing users to interact with the phone using their eyes. While this feature is not yet globally available, its potential is showcased through demonstrations at MWC, whereby users got to remotely control a car solely through eye movements. I can totally imagine how nifty this feature will be when it is fully available and how much lazier the human race will become.

Let’s delve deeper into a more in-depth review of this latest flagship offering by Honor. It has been a while that I get excited over a new smartphone launch and the new Honor Magic 6 Pro is deserving of the excitement as an indication of things to come in this up-and-coming global brand.

Design and Display

Upon unboxing, the Magic 6 Pro exudes luxury with its sage green color and gold accents. The 6.78-inch LTPO OLED display with curved edges offers a stunning visual experience with its 120Hz refresh rate and 1,600 nits peak brightness.

I tested it to load videos and some mobile games, all to optimal effects and desirability.

Camera Capabilities

These days, any flagship smartphone worth its salt would have to come with kickass camera features as a hygiene. The Magic 6 Pro did not disappoint in this aspect and you can easily tell the camera capabilities is a key selling point just by looking at the size of the lenses.

The Magic 6 Pro’s Falcon camera system impresses with a 108-megapixel main sensor, accompanied by telephoto, wide-angle, and ultrawide lenses.

The telephoto lens supports up to 100x digital zoom, showcasing excellent image quality even at extreme magnifications. Portrait mode delivers natural bokeh effects, though occasional struggles with very minor edge detection are noted.

We took it out for some test shoots and you can check out the images below to verify the high quality, ranging from macro to wide-angle to night shots:

As a photography enthusiast, the Magic 6 Pro scores high in the camera department for us, owing to the ease of use and versatility to switch between different modes as well as various AI-powered features.

Battery Life and Performance

Powered by the best-in-class Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, the Magic 6 Pro offers seamless performance across various tasks, including gaming and multitasking.

The Magic 6 Pro has a large 5,600-mAh silicon-carbon battery that ensure all-day usage with fast charging capabilities, making it a reliable companion for heavy smartphone users. I am a relatively heavy mobile user and I was happy to see that it could last through the day with one charge.

I also like the usage of a silicon-carbon battery versus the conventional lithium-ion battery. Touted benefits include a lower environmental impact and reduced risk of overheating, stuff that Greta Thunberg will approve.

Unique Features and Software

With AI being the buzzword in tech now, the Magic Pro 6 is packed with AI features. The MagicOS 8.0, based on Android 14, integrates AI features throughout the user experience.

For instance, Honor’s proprietary Magic Portal feature enhances productivity by simplifying content sharing across apps. It allows you to drag lines of texts or an image in the photo album to the side of the screen to attach them to an e-mail or social media apps for convenience. Currently supported apps are WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, Facebook Messenger, Google Maps, Gmail and Google Search, with more to be added in the future potentially.

Availability and Pricing

With a very competitive price tag of S$1,399, the Magic 6 Pro presents a compelling option for those who want to get maximum mileage from a flagship Android smartphone. I would say this is a worthwhile buy, just to get into the Honor smartphone line and ecosystem, in anticipation of greater things to come from this exciting, rising brand.

The Magic6 Pro is available in two colours – Epi Green and Black. Go for the Green for something different.

Exclusive Pre-order Extravaganza (20 March – 27 March 2024): Pre-order between 20-27 March and unlock benefits worth S$688.

Official Launch and First Sales Kick-off (from 28 March 2024): From 28 March, the Magic6 Pro will be up for grabs with premiums worth S$418.

Exclusive pre-orders are available at the HONOR Singapore official store on Shopee.

Verdict

The Honor Magic 6 Pro emerges as a frontrunner among Android flagships in 2024, boasting stellar camera performance, innovative AI features, and impressive battery life. While software support may lag behind competitors, its competitive pricing and luxurious design make it a strong contender in the smartphone market.

As Honor continues to establish itself as a prominent player in the global smartphone arena, the Magic 6 Pro signifies a bold step towards innovation and consumer-centric technology. I am excited about the next phase of innovations and product launches coming from Honor.
