Unmasking the Silent Threat of Colorectal Cancer: #My1stColonoscopy Campaign Returns for Third Year

In a bid to combat colorectal cancer, 365 Cancer Prevention Society (365CPS) has launched its #My1stColonoscopy campaign for the third consecutive year, running until June 30, 2024. This initiative, in collaboration with Icon Cancer Centre, offers free colorectal cancer screenings to individuals aged 45 to 70 from lower-income families, aiming to remove barriers to access and increase early detection rates.

Colorectal cancer ranks as the second most common cancer affecting both men and women in Singapore, with Chinese males aged 50 and above being the most affected group, according to the Singapore Cancer Registry Annual Report 2021. Despite its high treatability when detected early, many individuals, particularly those from low-income backgrounds, shy away from colonoscopy screenings due to cost concerns and apprehensions about the procedure.

Given that early stages of colorectal cancer often manifest without symptoms, early screening is crucial for timely intervention. Colonoscopy, a comprehensive examination of the colon and rectum, has proven to be effective in detecting precancerous lesions and early-stage cancers, potentially leading to better treatment outcomes and reduced mortality rates.

The screening program is open to individuals aged 45 to 70 who hold valid blue or orange Community Health Assist Scheme (CHAS) cards. Those who meet the eligibility criteria can register with 365CPS and undergo a pre-screening consultation with a doctor. However, individuals who have undergone colonoscopy in the last five years, require caregiver translation or interpretation, or have certain medical conditions may be excluded from the program.

To support this noble cause, members of the public can contribute via platforms such as Giving.sg and Give.asia, with donations eligible for 250% tax relief. Contributions will go towards funding colonoscopy medication, bowel preparation, specialist consultations, and full procedure costs for beneficiaries.

The #My1stColonoscopy campaign underscores a collaborative effort between 365CPS, Icon Cancer Centre, community groups, medical partners, and social service agencies. Together, they strive to raise awareness about colorectal cancer, remove barriers to screening, and encourage at-risk individuals to prioritize their health through early detection.

For those interested in participating or supporting the campaign, more information can be found on the 365CPS website or by contacting community partners directly. Let’s join hands in the fight against colorectal cancer and make a difference in the lives of those in need.
