As Singapore gears up for the Year of the Dragon, art enthusiasts and festival-goers are invited to immerse themselves in the vibrant and unconventional world of “Light to Night Singapore 2024.” Running from January 19 to February 8, this marquee event, organized by the National Gallery Singapore, promises a unique exploration of art, history, and sensory experiences, challenging traditional notions and inviting participants to reimagine the world through innovative perspectives.
Spanning three weeks, the festival boasts over 60 artworks and programs that include interactive installations, interdisciplinary performances, mesmerizing light projections, and live shows. From thought-provoking works by seasoned artists to contributions from emerging talents across Southeast Asia, the event showcases the diversity and creativity present in the region’s visual arts scene.
Centered around the theme of “Reimagine,” the festival encourages visitors to engage with art in fresh and immersive ways. From interactive installations to sensorial experiences, attendees are invited to participate, interact, and play with the artworks.
Ping Pong Go-Round by Lee Wen: A multi-directional table tennis game symbolizing the exchange of power, ideas, and dialogue.
Wishful Thinking by Whisperlodge: An immersive ASMR-inspired experience, offering unexpected textures and sounds.
8-bit Word Cloud by Justin Loke: A pixelated exploration of words and imagination, inviting participants to uncover hidden letters.
Party Pavilion by Howie Kim: A vibrant installation at the Asian Civilisations Museum Green, merging imagination with nostalgia through dancing lights and colors.
Renowned Southeast Asian artists push the boundaries of their craft, presenting unique artworks that venture into light projections and new materials. Notable presentations include “Wings of Change” by Kumari Nahappan, “Teo Eng Seng: Living the Life” by Teo Eng Seng and Milosh Luczynski, and “Temple of Love” by Arahmaiani, Wayang Merdeka, and Milosh Luczynski.
Art installations that ingeniously reimagine surrounding spaces include “Rapture” by Victor Tan, “Symphony of Order” by Sarah Choo Jing, and “Wayang Spaceship” by Ming Wong, offering fresh and multi-dimensional encounters around the Civic District.
Beyond installations, participants can partake in various programs, including Art x Social Festival Street, Dungeons & Dragons: The Art Quest, and Collective Canvas: A Tour Reimagined. The festival also extends its opening hours on weekends, providing visitors with ample time to explore and appreciate art.
