The Institution of Engineers, Singapore (IES), marked its 57th anniversary this year with a glittering celebration at the Marina Bay Sands Singapore, recognising outstanding contributions to the country’s development. Mr. Chee Hong Tat, Singapore’s Acting Minister for Transport, graced the event as the guest of honour, with over 1,000 attendees from industry, government, and academia.
IES Sustainability Awards 2023
Under the theme Engineering for a Sustainable Future, the 57th Annual Dinner emphasised IES’s commitment to advancing Singapore’s sustainable development. The inaugural IES Sustainability Awards recognized 10 engineering teams across three categories from 54 submissions:
Completed Engineering Projects:
- PSA Tuas Maintenance Base by PSA Corporation Ltd
- Phase 2 Intensification Project at BCA Braddell Campus by Building and Construction Authority (BCA)
- Indoor Vertical Hydroponics Farming using Nutrient Film Technique (NFT) by ITE College West
- Sustainable Road Paving Solutions for a Greener Future by Land Transport Authority
Innovation Projects/Solutions for Sustainability:
- Accelerated Catalyst Development Platform (ACDP) by A*STAR’s Institute of Sustainability for Chemicals, Energy and Environment (ISCE2)
- Solarisation of Singapore’s Industrial Estates by JTC Corporation
- Sustainable Green Station – Intelligent HVAC with AI-enabled energy optimization system for Greener MRT Stations by SMRT Corporation
- Smart Energy Town by Housing and Development Board
Promising Start-ups for Sustainability:
- Castomize – 4D-Printed Orthopaedic Casts by Temasek Polytechnic
- Flint Paper Battery by Flint
These projects, aligned with the IES Green Plan 2030, are nominated for the ASEAN Outstanding Engineering Achievement Awards 2023. IES President Mr. Dalson Chung expressed his encouragement for the vibrant engineering ecosystem in Singapore and emphasised the awards’ role in inspiring the younger generation.
IES Prestigious Engineering Achievement Awards 2023
Minister Chee presented the IES Prestigious Engineering Achievement Awards to 10 outstanding engineering teams across four categories:

- Advanced Aerospace Power Conversion System Development by Rolls Royce Pte Ltd
- IDentif.AI: Actionable Drug Optimisation for Pandemic Preparedness by National University of Singapore
Engineering Project:
- Rifle Range Nature Park by National Parks Board
- A Catalyst Coated Membrane Technology for PEM Fuel Cell by Temasek Polytechnic
- Maritime Security Unmanned Surface Vessels (MARSEC USV) by Defence Science and Technology Agency
- Phase 2 Project at BCA Braddell Campus by ECAS Consultants Pte Ltd
Technology Innovation:
- Smart Automated Aircraft Visual Inspection System (SAAVIS) by A*STAR’s Institute for Infocomm Research (I2R)
- Crimson S8: Singapore’s 1st Personal Aerial Vehicle (PAV) by NEO Aeronautics
Student Award:
- eNutri by Temasek Polytechnic
- Smart IoT Firewatch by ITE College Central
This year, IES received a record 73 submissions across the categories, and these winning projects are also nominated for the ASEAN Outstanding Engineering Achievement Awards 2023. Prof Yeoh Lean Weng, Emeritus President and Awards Committee Chairman of IES, praised the winners for their dedication to advancing national imperatives, from aerospace development to pandemic preparedness.
Tribute to Distinguished Engineers
Prof Su Guaning, President Emeritus of Nanyang Technological University (NTU), received the IES Lifetime Engineering Achievement Award for his extraordinary contributions to the engineering industry. Prof Yeoh Lean Weng was conferred the title of IES Honorary Fellow for his significant contributions to the engineering profession.
IES Outstanding Partner Award 2023
IES awarded the IES Outstanding Partner Award 2023 to SMRT Corporation Ltd for their 35-year collaboration, contributing to Singapore’s engineering advancements through technological breakthroughs and the maturing of rail engineering capabilities.
Student Scholarship Awards 2023
The IES-Yayasan Mendaki Scholarship was awarded to Arshof Ahamed S/O Ansar Ahamed (NTU) and Natasha Arisqa Putri Shaiful Bahri (Temasek Polytechnic), supporting their outstanding academic performance in engineering.
