[Review] Terra Madre Restaurant at Dempsey Hill – Organic Dining at wallet-friendly prices

I think our general perception of organic food and organic restaurants in Singapore is that they are expensive and the flavours may not justify the lofty price tags. Terra Madre seeks to change that perception.

Located in the lush enclave of Dempsey Hill, Terra Madre is offering a one-stop shop for everything organic and natural. Boasting 6,000 sq ft, Terra Madre is claimed to be Singapore’s largest organic and natural store.

Terra Madre debuted upon the realisation from the founders that there was a gap in the Singapore market for accessible organic and natural ingredients that offered customers both a retail and dining experience. The Dempsey Hill outlet is the first step of Terra Madre’s expansion plans to bring wallet-friendy organic dining and grocery shopping to Singapore.

Organic and Natural Retail Store

The outpost has curated an extensive range of over 1,000 products for its new retail store. The online and in-store offerings include pantry essentials, organic beverages, delectable confectionery, an extensive range of baking ingredients, specialty products like truffles, oils, spices, vinegars, and even household items.

Product highlights include organic Hot Chocolate sourced from a small family farm in the Amazon headwaters region of Peru; Sumac, a spice from Turkey with a tangy lime yet earthy-like flavour; and Organic Coconut Milk Powder sourced from Sri Lanka, made from freshly harvested coconuts.

Guests can even purchase products used in Terra Madre’s restaurant like organic tahini, organic freekeh, lemon oil, organic peanut butter, organic tri-coloured quinoa and more from the retail store to explore your cooking prowess.

Terra Madre Restaurant

At the Terra Madre Restaurant, an Australian-inspired food menu by Chef Gayatri Singh is served across breakfast, lunch and dinner.

The venue also offers vegetarian and vegan dishes and a wide selection of organic drinks. Diners can explore a mix-and-match section for lunch and dinner that promotes a communal dining experience that encourages diners to share and explore different dishes as a single table.

Where possible, Terra Madre collaborates directly with local food producers to ensure provenance and sustainable practices are maintained for all of their menu offerings.

We sampled the following items at the restaurant:

Superfood Smoothies – 50 Shades ($12): dark chocolate, vanilla, banana, pink Himalayan salt, organic dates and choice of unsweetened milk; and Deep Greens ($8): avocado, spinach, kale, cashew, organic chia and organic flax seeds
Charred baby carrots and dukkah, tahini, served with coconut dressing, plums, smoked paprika oil, parsley ($25) – with Gochujang baked slamon, yuzu, miso, lemon, spring onions, ogranic sesame seeds (+$8)
Sumac dusted cauliflower, served with french beans, red potatoes, smoked paprika oil, fresh turmeric, coconut, cauliflower puree, pomegranate ($29) – with Barbacoa, grass feed beef, pickled onion, salsa, grilled lime (+$6)
Desserts

We like how you choose a salad or vegatable as a main first before choosing a protein as an free add-on (with additional price top-up for more premium options). We are used to ordering from a menu the other way round, with the greens treated as a complementary side dish. At Terra Madre, the emphasis is on the greens, which the founders belive if prepared right, can be the main highlights of a meal, with intense flavours and multiple notes. We totally vibe with this concept, and the two dishes sampled delivered on all fronts too.

The sumac dusted cauliflower and the charred baby carrots come highly recommended by one of the founders and we would recommend them too for the rich amalgamation of flavours and textures.

We would certainly be back for more!

Future Expansion

Terra Madre will continue expanding its footprint across the island to push its mission to make organic and natural food more accessible to Singaporeans. All while expanding their current Dempsey Hill outlet with an added extensive cheese selection, including artisan, organic, and vegan options; as well as a dedicated organic and vegan ice cream store to add to their current retail experience by the end of the year.

Terra Madre will also be creating education programmes with gyms, schools, nutritionists and local food producers to help drive the message of healthy and sustainable eating. In addition, they are looking to create a platform that showcases and makes local food producers more accessible in Singapore.
