In a series of Instagram stories that have been viewed over 15, 000 times, a 23-year-old National University of Singapore undergrad, recounted a peeping Tom incident that happened at her hostel last November and is pushing for firm action to be taken against the perpetrator, adding that the latter had been given 12-months conditional warning by the police.
The third-year communications major was taking a shower in her hostel when she noticed an iPhone peeking from below the cubicle door. Before she could do anything, the phone vanished and the man who filmed her had made a swift escape.
A National University of Singapore (NUS) undergraduate, Monica Baey has come forward as the girl who figures in a controversial shower video that was said to be taken by fellow NUS undergrad Nicholas Lim.
According to reports, Monica who is also an intern at Rice Communications was showering in a hostel in November when she heard something behind the stall door, and had seen the mobile phone that pervert Nicholas Lim was using to film her from the bottom of the door. Before she could react or chase him, he had run out of the shower area.
Nicholas is said to be also an NUS student, who is studying Chemical Engineering. She has revealed his said identity and name in her Instagram stories.
She then filed a police report, and the investigation lead to the capture of the criminal Nicholas Lim. The video cam footage submitted by NUS had shown that he had entered the shower area and was looking for someone to film.
Reports have shown that after the police investigation, the perpetrator of the crime Nicholas Lim was asked to write an apology letter to Monica, which was published on her Instagram stories. Take a look:
The full text of his apology is as follows:
“Dear Monica,
I am Nicholas, and I am writing this letter to formally apologise for my vile and inappropriate action that happened in Eusoff Hall, on the final week of November and being on heavy alcoholic influence is no excuse at all.
I am extremely ashamed of what I have done and I am so sorry to have traumatised you in such a manner, nobody should ever have to go through such a traumatic experience.
I want to assure you that this will never happen to anyone else again, and I know actions speak louder than words. This incident has taught me an invaluable lesson and I will strive to be the best version of myself from here on.
Of course I hope to seek your forgiveness, but I understand that I am in no position to ask for anything and you have no obligation to even give me any form of closure. But I still want you to know that I am really sorry to have committed such an offence. I will be serving the sanctions mete out by the university while bearing in mind to only improve as a person from here.
Sincerely,
Nicholas”The apology has been edited for clarity.
Aside from the apology letter, Nicolas was allegedly given a 12-month warning from police and was suspended from the university for a single semester. He was also barred from entering areas of the university.
Monica claimed that she wanted to appeal the sentencing and punishments, but the investigating officer had allegedly told her to just accept the outcome.
She has since taken to Instagram to air her side, saying that this was not the first time that the school has tried to cover up incidents like this, and that the perpetrators have been let off easy, much to the consternation and frustration of victims such as her.
One Instagram user also messaged her, saying that she should be careful since Nicholas’ family is allegedly powerful. Monica says that victim blaming isn’t something that anyone should be doing in 2019.

Instead of focusing the attention on the victim, how about shifting that to talk about the perpetrator? Who is Nicholas Lim? Where does he work? Who is his family? What did he do to get off scott free? To the author of this article, I hope you see that it is filled with unneccesary victim blaming language, which is really harming victim further.
Nicholas Lim got BIG GUNS behind.
Big "GUNS"
The victim’s blog said she had accepted his profuse apology and said she felt much better, and even thanked him! Why then she continues to pursue this case and put her photos on Internet? What is the intention? Most girls would have felt ashamed and let the matter rest. The victim used vulgar LARGE 4-letter word repeatedly!!! She is no angel too!
To the offender, Nicholas Lim, what you have done was foolish and impulsive. You know now. Those who sneer and laugh at you are not your friends. Go home, kiss your mother and hug your father. Move on!!! Be strong and finish your education. If this society is still so hateful, migrate and live a better life. Do not disappoint your parents!!! There are many matured and wise people who did not speak out on this matter.
To NUS, please make sure the offender finish his education. TQ.
This was a peeping tom case that does not warrant Ministers and Senior Government Officers to be involved! Please attend to other more pressing national issues. TQ.
I am surprised that no one has left a reply to your comment. I will. YOU ARE SICK.
Would like to know just how powerful the parents are. This would be juicy news would it not?
All sex maniacs: please become NUS student and commit crime. Get caught wouldn't kena jail!. The most commit it after 12 month. Does it apply to local ITE, Poly, JC, NTU? Or its already long university/government practice that elitism above law? I can bet after all "work done" by NUS, nicholas still let go scott free! Isn't NAS daily just said Singapore in clean?
Kudos to you, brave young lady for standing up for your rights. As a guy, this act is shameless and cannot be condoned.
Perhaps you can establish a community to help counsel those other victims who 'remained silent' for whatever reasons.
I am sure you can help others as well.
Tear down the hostels
Firstly she uses vulgar words many times. No angel! And I find her not forgiving enough. Does she want Nicholas to die for his wrong doing?
NUS and other tertiary institutions in sgp need to consider separate living hall or dormitories for boys and girls.. the girls living area should be off limit to males and vice versa.. Prevention is better after all
