Lorry vs cyclist road rage video divides netizens on where to place the blame

Thanks to dashcams and rearview cameras, documenting road accidents has become easier and even a regular hobby for some dedicated motorists. In a viral video that has been shared more than 20,000 times, you may see a disturbing moment where a person tries to grievously harm another.

In a Facebook video posted by Roads.SG, netizens are aghast at what happened between a cyclist and a lorry driver on Pasir His Drive 3. Take a look at the video below, that has been viewed 3 million times.

The person who posted the video had this to say about the incident:

“TO BE HONEST, it is already hard to drive in one lane TOGETHER with a cyclist. And in this case, the cyclist was selfish and irresponsible to ride in the middle of the lane. Thus, the lorry honked TWICE. Please note, TWO SHORT HONKS ONLY. (Once to ask him to move to the side, another time when they ignored the horn).

However, the rowdy cyclist went beside the lorry and SMASH THE SIDE MIRROR, what the hell? And the lorry driver banged him onto the grass verge just to get back at the cyclist for what he has done. The cyclist fell to the ground but WAS NOT injured. He stood up and the lorry uncle stopped his vehicle.

Do you think the cyclist is right? How can one just smash the mirror and get rowdy just because he think he SHOULDNT GET HONKED. Is keeping to the side of the roads so hard?”

In the video above, you can see that the rear view camera catches a lorry first, then the lorry comes up to two cyclists who were initially using a small portion of the road next to the sidewalk.

The cyclists then move to the front of the lorry. One of the cyclists veers back to the sidewalk while the other cyclist remains on the road, between the owner of the camera and the lorry. The cyclist can be seen smiling and talking to his companion, but never moving back to the sidewalk.

After a while, the motorists and the cyclists come to a stoplight, and the cyclist keeps looking back at the lorry.

When the light turns green, the traffic moves, and the cyclist and lorry can be seen to be in close proximity to each other.

The moment then arrives where the cyclist finally veers back to the side lane but to the astonishment of all, he knocks the left side mirror of the lorry with his arm!

And then, the lorry turns sharply to the left, which puts it in a collision with the cyclist. You can see the cyclist fall on the grass, hit hard by the larger vehicle.

What happened next?

According to a follow-up video, both the cyclist and the lorry driver were charged for the incident. The cyclist, a 35-year-old man, was unhurt and very upset over what happened. He was charged with mischief and rash driving.

The lorry driver, on the other hand, who is 51 years old, appeared calm and cool after the incident but he was also charged with rash driving.

What do netizens have to say?

As usual, Singaporeans have a lot of opinions on what happened, and have had a continuous heated discussion on the matter. Here are some of their posts:

A lot of the comments expressed support of the lorry driver.

Some cyclists even took the side of the lorry driver, bemoaning the attitude of the cyclist who struck the side mirror.

More support for the lorry driver.

Some even say that the lorry driver may have only swerved into the cyclist because of the strike to the side mirror. After all, who would expect someone to do something so dangerous as destroy a side mirror while riding next to the vehicle?!

What do you think of this road rage incident? Let us know in the comments!
