How about a Peranakan-style Lunar New Year reunion dinner this year? Available at INDOCAFE – the white house

For fans of Peranakan cuisine, INDOCAFE – the white house, is one of the local restaurants in Singapore known for their authentic Peranakan food offering. They have come up with a special Peranakan-inspired menu for Lunar New Year and you can make a reservation with them for a Peranakan-style reunion dinner if you would like to try something different from the usual Chinese fares.

The restaurant is nestled along the lush tranquillity of Scotts Road and within walking distance from the Orchard shopping belt. The architecture itself is eye-catching. Remember the hit TV series, The Little Nonya? It’s like a walk into the set and Singapore’s colonial past. This makes the venue an ideal location for a special and important occasion like the family annual reunion dinner.

The special Lunar New Year menu is available at INDOCAFE form 2 Feb to 2 Mar 2018 (except on 19 and 20 Feb). Prices are as below:

Dine-in

Prices starts from the 7-course Happiness set at S$208++ (3 to 4 pax) right to their 9-course Bountiful set at S$688++. Full Chinese New Year set menu.

I sampled the dishes below during a tasting session:

INDOCAFE’s Glorious Prosperity Yusheng
Fish maw soup with prawn ball, pig tripe and fatt choy
Deep-fried red snapper with Assam Gulai sauce
Roasted chicken with chef’s signature sauce
Nonya steamed cabbage with mixed mushroom and pork skin
Fried Hong Kong noodles with leek, carrot and seafood
Bubur cha cha with glutinous ball

Verdict?

The difference is really the sauces and seasonings used. While the dishes served may look similar to the usual Chinese fares, there is a mix of spicy, sweet and savoury flavours, distinctive of Peranakan cooking. The standout dish for me was the ordinary steamed cabbage which was not only pretty to look at, but a nice Lunar New Year version of the Peranakan home favourite chap chye dish.

For the yusheng, if you like your yusheng to be of strong flavours, you will like the use of their own house sauce. Takeaways are also available for the Yu Sheng and their Treasure Pots:
