One reason to visit this year’s i Light Marina Bay if you are a reader of Alvinology is that you get to stand a chance to win a night stay in a Premier Bay Room with 2 complimentary breakfasts at Marina Mandarin! Read till the end for details on how to win this.
There are many more reasons to check out i Light Marina Bay, Asia’s leading sustainable light art festival. Into it’s fourth edition this year, the festival features 25 innovative and sustainable light art installations created by creative talents from around the world, lighting up Singapore’s iconic Marina Bay.
This year’s festival theme set by the festival’s multinational curatorial team “In Praise of Shadows”, inspired by one of the major writers of modern Japanese literature, Junichiro Tanizaki ‘s seminal essay of the same title.
Challenging the obsession that brighter is better and seeking to reframe perceptions of light and sustainability, the team hopes to inspire artists and festival-goers to re-imagine and reconsider sustainability issues in a new light and come together to create and sustain a harmonious relationship with our environment.
From 4 to 27 March, 25 sustainable light art installations transform Marina Bay into a kaleidoscopic display of light, colour and shadow. I was there last weekend to witness it for myself with my family and a selected group of loyal Alvinology.com readers and followers.
Check out all the posts they made via the hashtags #AlvinxiLight and #iLightMarinaBay on Instagram and Facebook.
Here are some of my favourite posts from the group:
The pictures are amazing aren’t there?
Best of all, most of the activities at i Light Marina Bay are open to public and free! There are lots of things to do for the whole family and individuals of all ages.
If you are concerned that there is a waste of electricity to light up all the installations, to promote an environmentally-responsible behaviour for a sustainable future, the participating artists have incorporated the use of recyclable materials and adopted energy-efficient lighting technologies in the creation of their stunning light art installations. Here is an example of one such work:
Every aspect of the festival will adopt a more effective and efficient management of resources to meet this commitment to the environment.
Beyond its spectacular showcase of visual art and urban space, the festival also offers a dynamic line-up of events and programmes over four weekends. These include PasarBella Goes to Town (11 Mar to 3 Apr); Marina Waterfront Bazaar (11 to 20 Mar); Music Acts @ Festive Stage (11 to 2o Mar); i Light Carnival at the Bay with Uncle Ringo (4 to 27 Mar); LED Kites Aerial Performance (11 to 26 Mar); Festival Village (4 to 27 Mar); Megafash Art Market (4 to 27 Mar); and many more! Full details available via the official website.
During my weekend excursion at the festival, we started off from PasarBella, checking out the traveling market for seafood, meat, dairy, fresh produce, wines and more. Some of us had beer and food:
We also brought the group to tour all the lighting installations, rounding up the tour with a round of Haagen Dazs ice cream for everyone at the makeshift Festive Village, featuring many other iconic F&B brands like Coffee Bandits, Kerbside Gourmet, The Travelling C.O.W. and Old Chang Kee.
My son and the other little ones in the group went crazy at the i Light Carnival at the Bay, going for one ride after another with Uncle Ringo:
There is just so much to do at the festival that we were unable to experience everything in one evening. This means we will be heading back there again this weekend to check out more stuff which we might have missed.
