Caffé B @ Marina Bay Sands

Caffé B is a social dining and bar concept that fuses Italian culinary traditions with Japanese cultures. Located in The Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands, the level 1 shopfront houses a popular bar while the restaurant is at basement 1.

The restaurant and bar is headed by a globetrotting Japanese managing director, Tae Tsuchida, bringing her international influences into the menu and offerings.

Accolades for Caffé B include being named ‘Recommended Restaurant for Wine Lovers’ in Singapore Tatler’s Best Restaurant Guide 2012, ‘one of Singapore’s Best Restaurants for its exceptional cuisine and service’ in Singapore Tatler’s Best Restaurant Guide 2013 and ‘one of Singapore’s Top Restaurants for European-Italian Cuisine’ in Wine & Dine Top Restaurants Guide 2014.

I was invited for a sampling of their revamped, easy-on-the-wallet set lunch menu. Priced at S$25++, Caffé B’s Set Lunch Menu is catered to business executives for weekday food escapades, without breaking the bank.

Fresh bread at the start

The three-course menu starts off with a starter of Potato and Prosciutto Salad, where chunks of potato are wrapped with a piece of aged Prosciutto Ham. The creation is topped with bonito flakes and served with mesculin, tossed in miso vinaigrette:

Alternatively, you can opt for the soup of the day instead of the appertiser. During the tasting, we had clam chowder:

The highlight of the set lunch is the selection of four main courses including vegetarian and non-vegetarian options. To ensure we get a taste of all four without stuffing ourselves silly, the kitchen had kindly prepared special sampling portions:

Tuna Sake Tataki – quick seared tuna with sake, served with hash browns, tomato florentine and red pesto
Beef Verde – black angus beef drizzled with sauce verde, side by edamame and potatoes with parsley
Vegetarian Pasta Alla Fungi – spaghetti cooked al dente in wild mushroom cream sauce
Chicken Lasagna Parmegiano – spinach pasta layers with chicken, shiitake and eggplants, covered in bechamel sauce, pomodoro and mozzarella

I would recommend the tuna or the beef for value and for hearty diners like myself.

The meal is rounded up with a serving of Trio Profiteroles – baked profiteroles filled with matcha (green tea), red bean and chocolate cream. Yes, you get all three flavours:

The Set Lunch Menu is available starting 25 January 2015 between 12pm to 3pm from Monday to Sunday. The pricing is attractive for quality, upmarket dining at a reasonable price in the pricey Marina Bay area. The varied selection of mains also makes it easy for large group dining where there may be a need to cater to different palates.
