Authentic Italian food at 1-for-1 prices in the CBD

Food becomes exponentially more expensive the closer you get to Raffles Place, which is why I love finding a good restaurant in the CBD using the Entertainer app. Meals are so much more affordable when they are buy-one-get-one free!

Last year, we decided to check out PepeNero, an Italian restaurant in Stanley Street, just a few blocks away from SGX where I was taking a class. PepeNero has impressive reviews at hungrygowhere.com.sg and I was eager to try it out.

I was pleased to discover that PepeNero is a cosy restaurant just off Stanley Street with lots of parallel parking spaces along it. Alvin and I liked the candlelit interior and quiet ambience. It’s just the place for a post-work date – unassuming, with a great selection of wines; quiet, so you can have proper conversation, and good food.

While waiting for our food, bread is served with olive oil, balsamic vinegar and olive paste.

We ordered:

The pasta was cooked al dente and my preferred dish of the night was the squid ink spaghetti. The natural fishiness of the dish was balanced out by the tomato-based sauce and the prawns provided the requisite protein needed to fill me up. I daresay that this is one of the best squid ink pasta dishes I have tried locally.

The special, however, was a little too fishy and bitter for my liking but Alvin said that the taste grew on him after a few more bites. He gave it a thumbs-up.

For a fuller meal, do order more dishes than just the pasta. That’s what we intend to do next time we dine there.
