My Peranakan Spice Box @ Toa Payoh Central

Rachel and I recently discovered a hidden restaurant in Toa Payoh Central, My Peranakan Spice Box, that serves pretty good Peranakan cuisine at a reasonable price.

Quality Peranakan food do not come cheap, given the tedious food preparation right from the condiments to the main ingredient.

The menu

While not exactly the best there is around, Rachel and I are able to enjoy a decent Peranakan meal for two at under $20, ordering around 4 dishes and drinks to share. We find this pretty reasonable. Moreover, there is no GST and service charge which would have amounted to an additional 17% of the total bill. Do note that the restaurant is non air-conditioned though.

Buah Keluak Toast
Brinjal fries (which are just fried brinjal)
Stewed Pork La Mian
Honey Chicken with Rice
Peranakan Chap Chye (mixed veggies)
Meat ball soup
Fish Maw Soup
Babi Pongteh
Beef Rendang

The Babi Pongteh (Peranakan Pork Belly Stew) and Buah Keluak ( Indonesian Black Nuts) Toast are must-try. The former is a classic Peranakan dish while the latter is an interesting fusion concept.
