Tony Leung to play Lee Kuan Yew in upcoming ‘1965’ movie

Via AsiaOne:

Hong Kong actor Tony Leung is set to play the young Lee Kuan Yew in an upcoming movie called ‘1965’, reported Sina.com.

Heavyweights such as Maggie Cheung and Hollywood actress Julianne Moore are also slated to star in the movie, which will be directed by Hong Kong director, Peter Chan.

‘1965’ is reported to be a collaboration between Singapore’s Jiale Movies and Peter Chan, and will be about Singapore’s independence in 1965, amid events such as the 90 days turmoil, ethnic strife and political struggle.

Filming is set to start in the fourth quarter of this year and will take place in Singapore and Malaysia.

Tony Leung Chiu-Wai (梁朝伟) to play Lee Kuan Yew? Really? Singapore’s history just got sexier by a million times. Watch this animated GIF I did for a preview of things to come:

    Big stars in local film?
TONY Leung Chiu Wai, Maggie Cheung and Julianne Moore to star in a local film about Singapore's independence?

That is the rumour that has been circulating in the media and on the Internet.

But Mr Daniel Yun, chief executive officer of Singapore-based film label Homerun Asia that is behind the film, says: 'The rumours on the cast are factually inaccurate. The casting is on-going and no cast is confirmed.'

On Wednesday, Lianhe Wanbao had reported on the juicy casting of the top Hong Kong and American stars and the Chinese online portal Sina has also carried the news.

The US$5-million (S$6.1-million) film, called 1965, is a co-production between Homerun and China's Zonbo Media, with Singapore permanent resident Lee Thean-jeen in the director's seat.

Hong Kong film-maker Peter Chan will play a supervisory role, though 'the exact extent of his involvement is still being discussed', says Mr Yun.
