Ootoya (大戸屋) is an international Japanese restaurant chain with outlets in Japan, Thailand, Taiwan, Hong Kong and now, Singapore.
The Singapore restaurant is located in Orchard Central and serves quality, simple Japanese cuisine.
In Japan, Ootoya is marketed as a budget restaurant whereas in Singapore, it is positioned as mid-range, slightly upmarket. I have not tried Ootoya in Japan, but I like what I ate in Singapore.
I went back twice within a week – the first time with my buddies, Leon and Ding An; the second time with Rachel.
The menu is a little limited with only around ten pages of food items. The items are mainly simple Japanese fare and you will not find local influenced items like crab stick sushi or fanciful fusion stuff.
The main courses all come with lots of accompanying side dishes. I like it that a tad more effort done on the side dishes as compared to most similar priced Japanese restaurant in Singapore. For instance, the miso soup actually had visible bits of pork in it and the pickled cucumber was served with prawn roes on top.
I am likely to visit Ootoya again and would recommend it for simple, quality Japanese dining at a fairly reasonable price. The Teriyaki chicken salad set was pretty memorable for me and I like the side dishes served with all the sets.

Nice. Food looks hearty and wholesome! We should have an outing here! 😀
My order was a charcoal grilled chicken cutlet with basil dressing, on top of a green salad. Not teriyaki chicken!
