Via their official website, Ananda Bhavan claims to be the oldest Indian vegetarian restaurant in Singapore, since 1924.
From one small restaurant at Selegie Road, Ananda Bhavan has now expanded to four branches. Two are located at the heart of Little India and one along Syed Alwi Road and one at Changi Airport, Terminal 2.
The restaurant serves a wide selection of North Indian, South Indian, and Indian Chinese cuisines. The restaurant also claims to use no MSG, no preservatives, no additives and do not reuse cooking oil in their food preparation.
Rachel and I visited their Syed Alwi restaurant, located opposite Mustafa Centre. We were just done buying some Bollywood DVDs and both had a sudden craving for authentic Indian cuisine.
Ananda Bhavan was enjoying brisk business even past dinner time. We figured if we follow where the crowd was, the food should be good.
We were right.
Between the two of us, we ordered two mango lassi, a garlic naan and a samosa platter to share.
The samosa comes ladled with a mixture of spices and colourful gravies. Each bite returns a different flavour when you scoop up a different combination. It was a pity the dish was served cold though which made it less palatable.
The food was pretty authentic, much like the flavorful fare we sampled while we were traveling in India.
Rachel and I vowed to bring our India traveling companions, Jeremy and Hui Tee to Ananda Bhavan one day to try the food. However, we were not too sure if they serve vegetable chow mein which Hui Tee grew addicted to in India, eating it at every meal.
