Banyan Group has officially unveiled Mamula Island by Banyan Tree in its first full operating season under the luxury hospitality brand, marking the opening of Banyan Tree’s first resort in Europe. Located on a secluded island at the entrance of the UNESCO listed Bay of Kotor in Montenegro, the 32-room resort transforms a restored 19th century fortress into a luxury island retreat that combines heritage, wellness, gastronomy, and cultural experiences.
Surrounded by the Adriatic Sea, Mamula Island by Banyan Tree occupies the historic Fort Mamula, originally constructed in the 1850s as a coastal defence fortress guarding the entrance to the Bay of Kotor. The landmark underwent a seven-year restoration led by developer Samih Sawiris in collaboration with Lisbon based MCM Architecture & Design, Montenegrin conservation and architecture studio Projektor, and local heritage authorities.
The resort’s interiors, created by Piotr Wisniewski and weStudio Berlin, blend mid-century influences with local craftsmanship through the use of natural stone, solid oak, aged brass, organic textiles, bespoke furniture, and artwork inspired by the region. Architectural elements from the original fortress, including its signature arches, have been thoughtfully integrated into the contemporary design.
Guests arrive via private boat transfer across Boka Bay or by helicopter from Dubrovnik or Tivat, with panoramic views of Montenegro’s coastline. Every room and suite overlooks the Adriatic Sea, with Heritage Suites preserving the original stonework and historic features of the fortress, while the newly built accommodations offer modern interiors, floor to ceiling windows, and private terraces. The resort’s Heritage Sky Suites have previously been recognised as Best Hotel Suite at the AHEAD Awards Europe and ranked among the world’s top ten hotel suites.
Dining at the resort showcases the flavours of Montenegro through seasonal local produce and freshly caught seafood. Parasol, located beside the fortress’s three outdoor pools, serves a seafood focused crudo menu, while Kamena Restaurant highlights locally sourced ingredients with views across the Adriatic. Celeste offers relaxed outdoor dining inspired by the coastal cuisines of Italy, the Caribbean, and the Levant. Guests can also unwind at Pinea Bar, an intimate speakeasy style venue featuring handcrafted cocktails and vinyl music evenings.
Wellbeing remains a central part of the Banyan Tree experience with the introduction of the brand’s signature Banyan Tree Spa, housed within the fortress tower. Guided by Banyan Tree’s Eight Pillars of Wellbeing, the spa offers treatments inspired by local plants and natural ingredients alongside traditional Thai, Javanese Indonesian, and Chinese healing therapies. Facilities include Finnish and herbal saunas, a steam room, halotherapy room, flotation chamber, ritual rooms, an indoor gym, hydrotherapy experiences, and the brand’s signature Royal Banyan treatment.
Guests can also enjoy the island’s natural surroundings through kayaking, paddleboarding, water biking, and e biking, or venture further to explore attractions including the Blue Cave, Kotor Old Town, Royal Lovćen, Cetinje, Skadar Lake, the Tara River, and the Luštica Peninsula. Curated food tours and local experiences offer opportunities to discover Montenegro’s history, culture, and coastal traditions.
Creative programming further enhances the guest experience through a new Artists in Residence initiative featuring workshops, exhibitions, maker sessions, opera performances, live music, and the Operosa Music Festival, bringing local and regional artists together on the island.
Mamula Island by Banyan Tree is also available for exclusive full island buyouts, making it a distinctive destination for weddings, private celebrations, corporate retreats, and special events across its restored fortress, outdoor terraces, gardens, spa, and beachfront spaces.
